New to Ableton(8.2.1)- couple of easy questions.
New to Ableton(8.2.1)- couple of easy questions.
I just purchased an Akai MPK25 to go with my copy of Ableton Live 8.2.1 for Mac OSx.
Working in arrangement view, it is my understanding that it is possible to "see" the music as you record/play. (Skip through to 2:53-2:58 of this video.. I want to see something similar to what the guy has on his screen.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTtulwgWgHk). I'm sure it's a super easy fix, I'm just pretty new to this.
Also, I know there is a way to preview the instrument rack by selecting a headphone icon- I can't find it in the interface :/ Help?
Thanks!

Have you done the included lessons for live yet? they are a really good starting point to better understand how the program works..
If you want to 'see something similar to what the guy has on his screen' - create some tracks, create some clips, and work on an arrangement maybe? What that guy has on his screen is pretty typical looking for any DAW software. Not sure what kind of fix you'd need, other than just writing a song ?
I think reading the manual and doing the included lessons would be helpful to you.

I've gone through a lot of the tutorials(from Ableton, Sonic Academy, and Tom Cosm), and read the manual. My issue is that when I'm using either the MPK25 or my laptop keyboard in arrangement mode, I can hear the music but it isn't being "shown," if that makes sense. It seems to me like it would be an issue with the settings.. ?cotdagoo wrote:Have you done the included lessons for live yet? they are a really good starting point to better understand how the program works..

what do you see when recording, on the lane of your instrument - is there only a bar getting longer? Then you can unfold the view of that lane by clicking on the circle right to the name of the channel. Then you should be able to see a representation of the notes you record into your clip on the lane in the arrangement
Generally you can fold/unfold a lot of elements of the interface by clickig on little circles.

As I'm playing, nothing registers on the screen. No solid bar to expand, nothing.pepezabala wrote:what do you see when recording, on the lane of your instrument - is there only a bar getting longer? Umm... sounds like you're not recording anything... have you enabled the record button on the track and global record before you hit the play button and play the keyboard?riotgrrl wrote:As I'm playing, nothing registers on the screen. No solid bar to expand, nothing.
To 'see' the music you must be recording it, as fas as I know...

I've tried hitting the record and play buttons on both the UI and the MPK25- nadda.DSPI wrote:Umm... sounds like you're not recording anything... have you enabled the record button on the track and global record before you hit the play button and play the keyboard?riotgrrl wrote:As I'm playing, nothing registers on the screen. ETA- Actually, I wasn't using the Play button in conjunction with the Record button. Thanks for the help!

arm the track, hit record, hit play, and play your notes on the keyboard..
might be good to take a longer look at the manual, or start off with some more basic tutorials so you can understand how the program works before attempting to use it for simple tasks.
