Yeah it's amazing how many people don't even read the original question for things like "synths released over the last year or two...." and come up with things like Albino, Reaktor, FM8, Synth1, sylenth1 etc. It's like as soon as any form of synth recommendation request is posted, it's immediately interpretted as "Tell me all your favorite synths of all time and then try to post synths that nobody else has mentioned yet!!!!"mholloway wrote:Yay I look forward to this thread becoming yet another list of every soft-synth currently available on the market!

Both are U-he synths
Tyrell N6 Free analog style synth.
Bazille 0.4 Free while in alpha... Modular digital synth.
if you dig those, I would get U-he ACE.

Alchemy is great for sample manipulation, but I found its VA stuff only decent (as opposed to great). The filters don't amaze me for VA stuff, but they're well-suited for sample work.
The additive engine is pretty awesome, but there are a few things in the UI in the additive editor that bug me and make me less inclined to use it.

DCAM Synth Squad... Costs as much as the others, but you get 3 great sounding synth's and Fusor.
Re: Recommend some new soft synths?
thanks for these suggestions! - some I already have or I'm at least familiar with - but I'm looking forward to checking out the rest! For years I was sticking to mostly hardware, so I still have much to learn with these soft synths!
...and yes, I was specifically looking for more recent releases. I feel like you can here sonic differences from 5 year old soft synths to more recent ones.

1. Super sounding digital crap synth ?mersault wrote:thanks for the quick responses!
doing mainly dance/hip hop/some dancehall -
I feel like there's room for almost anything as far as synths go these days. ...so I guess that's why I wasn't so specific. My goto synths lately have been Arturia collection, Sugarbytes Unique, FM8 - I'm really quite open to anything. I guess I'm looking for either something super new school digital sounding, OR something totally old school analog - does that narrow it down? hahaha!!! some 90's sounding synths are the only thing that really turns me OFF!
Pick Synapse Dune or Waldorf Largo or older NI Massive
2. Old school Analog ?
Pick PolyKB II
Personal favourite ? Toxic Biohazard, which is currently in promotion for only 49 $, instead of 99 $. (not sure when it ends)

It's a real monster synth with lovely features. It's a hybrid synth which combines subtractive synthesis and FM. There are 6 oscillators, powered with 20-30 waveforms (plus you can load custom single cycle waveforms !) and there is a FM modulation matrix where you can easily add some FM Synthesis touch (not as advanced as FM8 but much much much quicker and easier). Such combination (with very nice sequencers, unison features) with nice distortion unit, EQ, reverb, delay, chorus can provide really fresh sounds. But there is one downside. Factory bank is filled mostly with some soundscapes etc.
not sure what you mean by dance but I created a soundbank for toxic biohazard which contains only leads, the style is hmm modern pop, dance crap (Guetta etc.) So it can sound like this (no additional processing, only toxic biohazard)

and next part, sometimes faster, sometimes more trancy

the truth is that you can create modern sounds with most synths (dune, largo, massive, toxic, even old cakewalk z3ta). It's about your synth programming skills or buying some third party presets - there are some modern third party presets for dune, largo, massive for sure. and usually it's about 15-20 $. just use google and you'll find some interesting sounds for sure. DCAM synth squad is worth thinking too. All can create some digital madness or VA like stuff.

Just got Zebra 2, and holy crap. Now I understand why everybody's always sporting such huge fanboy boners over it.
Get it. 200 bucks and more than worth it.
