Multiple Mixes in One Project File
Multiple Mixes in One Project File
Going along with my last post about multiple arrangements in one project file, I would also like the same thing for mixes.
I want to be able to have multiple mixes for an arrangement so I can try different mixes out and compare them against each other. Obviously automation in the arrangement would be specific to an arrangement, but general level settings and plug-in chains on a channel would be the things that could be stored in a mix.
So ultimately I would like the ability to have multiple arrangements and mixes, and I want to be able to interchange information and edits and settings and plug-ins, etc... between the arrangements and mixes as I see fit.
THIS WOULD BE AWESOME!!!!!

Re: Multiple Mixes in One Project File
Sounds like just rendering/bouncing/resampling the different versions would make things easier for everyone...
Re: Multiple Mixes in One Project File
I would also like alternate mixes / arrangements in one set
Bounced or rendered versions don't do the job. The point is to keep the edits available, not to kill the thing.

Re: Multiple Mixes in One Project File
Just save it as a new set...yeah, yeah then it's more files to keep track of.
How easy does it have to be for you?

So you suggest this workflowdoghouse wrote:Just save it as a new set...yeah, yeah then it's more files to keep track of.
How easy does it have to be for you?
- User wants to try new section
- save current set as new set,
- in new file alter bars 64-68 to try new bridge section.
- write and alter drum parts to fit new part
- compare with other version by ... um loading up a rendered wave of the .. oh hang on
- load up the older version and render out the segment
- load up the diverged version again
- find the wave you just rendered out and put it on a new track
- A/B the two segments / mixes by globally muting all by the new track you dragged in
- realise you rendered that segment out with master channel compression on, which is now re-applied through the divergent master
- re-route preview render through main outs
- A/B
- pick one of them
my proposed method
- User wants to try new section
- drag arrangement segment from bars 64-68 to Session "group clip"
- duplicate the "group clip"
- write and alter drum parts to fit new part
- A/B the duplicate and the original
- pick one of them

Re: Multiple Mixes in One Project File
Thanks guys.
Felt I was alone on a desert island on that one for a hot minute. I think it would be absolute heaven to have this feature, and it would put Ableton Live 9 light years ahead of everybody else on the market. The amount of time this would save me would be immense, I do believe. It's really an extension of the concept of the session view verses the arrange page. Multiple arrangements and multiple mixes that are interchangeable would be divine. I think that computers are getting powerful enough to handle these kinds of workflow dreams that up until now have not really been feasible.
Please, more people chime in with ideas, good or bad. Don't care...

Re: Multiple Mixes in One Project File
Isn't this just what Richie Hawtin's Kapture does?
Re: Multiple Mixes in One Project File
Don't know Kapture. I will check it out.

Re: Multiple Mixes in One Project File
Seems similar in concept, but I don't know if I can take pieces from each arrangement and move those pieces freely between arrangements. Will look into it more though...
One of the reasons for having multiple arrangements in for multiple purposes (Radio, album, TV edit, etc...) simply comparing mixes is one thing, but to be able to dynamically work between different arrangements is another. Although I still need to investigate it more though.
My main idea is incorporating this functionality into the program itself, which should allow this feature to be more flexible, in theory.

Re: Multiple Mixes in One Project File
You could always copy your entire arrangement over to session view, and then use kapture to store the various mixer/device settings.
I dont think pre-drawn envelopes would transfer from arrangement view to session view though, so if you wanted to preserve these you'd probably just have to have one arrangement after another in arrangement view.
