Playing back a MIDI sequence by step

Post by kanthos » Tue Jun 14, 2011 5:37 pm

I'm trying to integrate a Guitar Rig controller into my setup, and I'm looking to map a variety of things to the buttons on the guitar at different times. Chords are easy, but I have another idea and I'm trying to see if it's possible. I know how to do it in Cubase with the Arpache SX plugin.

What I want to do is play a 'solo'. With only 5 buttons on the guitar, I clearly can't play a solo note by note, but what I'd like to do instead is record a solo ahead of time and find a way to trigger each note one by one, in my own time. The Arpache SX plugin in Cubase lets me do that by dragging a MIDI clip into the plugin and using that as the basis for the note data. If I press and hold a key, the sequence will get played back in that key, but if I press and release a key quickly, each individual note gets played in order. So if my clip is the notes C D E F G, I can press C and hear C, wait for a while, press C and hear D, wait, press C and hear E, etc. Obviously, I don't want to wait, but my band doesn't play to a clicktrack so I need something here that will let me play back the notes I need, in order, in my own time, letting me sync up with the band.

Any ideas on how to do something like this in Live? I don't care about the method, as long as it actually involves me doing something for each note (I'm 'cheating' enough here; I don't want to just press and hold one note for the whole thing) and as long as it doesn't restrict me to a fixed tempo.
