What is the best way to compare a project in progress with a commercially released reference track?
Should I just drop the whole reference track into a channel and set the cross fader so that all my ]tracks route to one side of the crossfader, and the reference track is on the other side of the cross fader?

don't do that if you have any efx on the masterchannel, especially compressor/limiter etc.
I listen to reference tracks externally, not with Live but with itunes or finder. (I have a limiter on the masterchannel)

If i do serious mixing i use my external monitor controller and a cd player. If it should be quick and dirty i use Lives file browser and the preview/cue level knob...

Add the reference track to a new channel
Switch the output to Ext. Out instead of Master
Mute the track [Deactivate]
Use the solo button to A/B
This will avoid any processing that you have on the master channel and make it easy to switch
You could also map that solo button to something else so you can adjust things with the mouse while checking the reference track
