Stutter Edit Buffer Position and Quantize Features

Can anyone properly explain how Buffer Position and Quantize modules work in Stutter Edit? I've watched multiple videos and tutorials that do not go into the details of these features. Some say buffer position allows you to choose the portion of the sample you want to effect while I've experienced it allows you to choose the sample only in terms of it dynamic hits (keeping the notes in the sample intact).

With the Quantize module turned on, the stutter feature seems to be more distinct in its cuts however it's hard to tell what is happening once messing around with the range on the Quantize module.

Any insight on these two features would be extremely appreciated as no one has been able to explain this yet.

P.S If the buffer position is not able to select a portion of the sample that you want to effect, is there a way to actually select the portion of the sample you want to effect by jumping to a particular part of the sample? I've seen this in videos, but not sure how it's done.

stutter edit looked promising to me until i got tired of its "sound". like everything is put thru a bitcrusher

@perplex The bitcrushing is optional - you can always turn it off if you don't like it. I don't mind it occasionally, but it's a bit overused.

@angrymonkey2 I just grabbed Stutter Edit on offer a couple of days ago and having been playing today and can confirm that you can do exactly what you want. Fortunately it's also not too tricky once you've got your head round the interface a bit.

OK, so the first thing to say is that, as far as I can tell, you can only do this for 1 bar of audio. I tried to do it with two bars to get some variation in a chord sequence, but that just doesn't work.

It is possible to select any portion of audio with a 1 bar range using the Buffer Position. I've only bothered to do this for the start position of the sample but, in this way, it's possible to largely replace the use of slicing for segments up to 1 bar in length, which can be pretty neat.

So, let's say you want to be able to play bits of your sample starting on 1/8 notes in the bar, do this:

1) Turn Buffer Position on.
2) Set Movement Mode to Grid.
3) Set Grid Size to 1/8.
4) Make sure Lock L/R is turned on - this will ensure that your left and right channels are playing the same chunk of sample.
5) Make sure Reverse is switched off, unless you want to play your sample backwards of course.
6) If all you want to do is trigger chunks of your sample at normal speed, then make sure the curve bar at the bottom is right in the middle between the convex and concave curve settings, otherwise (possibly cool sounding) weirdness may result.
6) There are two bars, one on each side of the buffer display for each channel. You only need to worry about the blue one. This shows where your sample will start playing from when you trigger the gesture, assuming forwards playback. At the bottom of this blue vertical bar there's a white rectangle. Grab this by hovering over it and holding down the left mouse button, then drag it to the 1/8th note within the bar that you'd like your audio to start playing at when the gesture is triggered.

A really easy way to test you've got this right is just to set up a 1 bar clip in the session view, start it off playing, and then fiddle with the Stutter Edit settings whilst that clip is looping. What you'll find is that if you leave the Buffer Position in its default state, when you trigger your gesture sample playback will always begin on the first beat of the bar, but the further to the right you drag the blue bars in the Buffer Position panel, the later in the bar your playback will start when you trigger the gesture.
