The French Style We All Love

Post by theofficialcityboy » Mon Jul 25, 2011 1:28 am

Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to create a hard hitting french synth.
I am looking into something similar to a deadmau5 and justice feel.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuC2MUmQaG4

Madeon drops it pretty hard at 1:03 in
I understand that there are a ton of different sounds going, and a lot of sidechain compression which brings out that poppy feel, but I am looking for help on the main synth, and not so much the glitchy details.
I would really appreciate it If anyone has any suggestions for specific vsts or samples that I could look into.
Take care.

I find instruments and chain selector are good for doing that kind of chopping between instruments thing - just map the chain selectotor a midi pedal and off you go.. :)

As for synths - many could do that kind of thing - what you got?

When I read the title I thought it was something they typed out in 2006 but didn't hit submit until this past weekend.

sacré blue!

c'mon someone, recreate this classic Daft Punk synth and explain how it's done, it's a good lesson in sound design. Put your money where you mouth is, post the sound.

irony detection fail :P

Watch out for next month's Future Music Magazine. It features Fred Falke in their "In The Studio" series. Looks like a good one.

Honestly, I have no idea how it was made but if I would like to create such track I would first start looking for the "main sound" (that one which starts at 1:04 with the kick) - it's the key sound, sidechained. Probably it would sound very nice alone, sidechained just with bassline, without all these "small", "extra" sounds. If you find such big preset, sounding nice sidechained, then it's 80 % success ;)

Then just chop it, and try to find other presets, samples, fx to fill the gaps.

I know, this is pretty general but it's what I would do.
VST Cafe - music production blog, ableton, vst
Novation V-Station, Toxic Biohazard, Cakewalk Z3ta+ - modern electronic, EDM, pop soundbanks | Tone2 Gladiator Space Station - soundbank
