Buzby, have you read Supernatural by Graham Hancock? It is an interesting look at the role that entheogens have played in the evolution of the human mind. Some of the book is a bit dry but overall is a pretty exciting read, especially the later parts on DMT.

Have you had any luck with them?

I remember one of the first times I tried it, I downloaded some program that would modulate between frequencies that you could set.

I was listening in headphones with my eyes closed, and when I was finally done and turned them off, it was like my mind came back to my body, even though it had been there the whole time.

I had been entirely conscious, entirely unimpaired in thinking/feeling etc. the entire time, but when I opened my eyes and took off the phones, it felt like I had came back from somewhere, or like my mind and body had been reconnected. Pretty wild.

I just reread those two sentences, and they read like hippy-dippy horseshit, but they're actually pretty accurate to the experience.

USE HEADPHONES

make a simple sine wave operator patch, one Osc on Fixed Freq mode set to 100 Hz.
set its track to pan hard left.
copy the Operator to a second track.
pan that track hard right.
play/program a loooooong midi note to trigger them both.
press play/record and tweak the 2nd Operator's Freq from ~88.2 to 104

you'll hear 'beat frequencies' in your freaking brain man, IN YOUR BRAIN!!! listen through the left ear you'll hear a constant tone. listen to the right and you'll hear a tone you're changing. listen to them both ON HEADPHONES and you hear whuh whuh whuh whuh whuh.

If anyone's interested, I just made a quick Instrument Rack with two instances of Operator panned hard L and R.

Fixed frequency at ~200hz, macro knob is set to control the frequencies.

I have one Operator set to a range of 200hz to 200hz (i.e. doesn't change)

The other is set to 200hz to 220hz.

As you turn the macro knob, it will increase the amount of beating from 0hz up to 20hz.

Also, I just tried singing/harmonizing with the pitch, and it's pretty fucked up - feels like your entire skull resonates with the harmony/lack thereof

I think an interesting thing to try would be to slowly, (like over the course of hour or more) to smoothly change the beating frequency. So maybe you start out at an alpha frequency then move down to theta or delta and then alfter spending some time there move up to beta or gamma to end the session. Haven't tried it but I think you could take yourself on quiet a trip.

Back in 1998 I used "Make a Test Tone" to create some long slow sweeps that were offset from each other at different rates. It was for a "Psychology of Consciousness" course project in grad school. I had people listen and then immediately write about their experiences and how it changed over time. I didn't have a large enough sample, but the results were interesting and close to what I thought they would be given the frequencies I chose.

Also worth mentioning that from what I have read binaural beating really only works with headphones. The reason being that then the beat frequency is actualy being created in your brain, not in the interference of the sine waves in the air. This is a really important and interesting fact. The pulsing frequency you hear when you have a sine wave of different frequency coming in each ear is created in your brain. If you pull one ears headphone off you will hear a pure tone in the remaining headphone, and vis versa. As far as I know it is the actuall creation of the binaural beat in your brain that can effect your state of consciosness and the same result is not found from listening to a beat created by mixing two sine waves in the air.

Headphones are ideal and highly recommended for sure, but a good stereo system can also be effective with a crowd. I used to open live shows with "beats" before I would go on stage (1000 Hz + 1007.83 Hz sine waves). It quickly changes the mood and vibe, and really gets the crowds attention : )
