powerbook g4 1.67ghz, which live version?

Post by jimdrake » Mon Aug 08, 2011 10:24 pm

hi,

i want to use an old powerbook g4 as a midi recorder and sequencer (maybe some simple audio playback).

which version runs best? 5, 6, or 7?

are the current midi plugins (like scale) new? or is all the midi processing common for these version?

thanks, james.

as far as I remember the midi plugs are the same since they introduced midi in live 5. Someone correct me if this is wrong.

Live5 should run leaner than Live6, but if you are using Live only as a midi-sequencer then 6 or 7 will probably run fine as well. Instruments and some audio efx are cpu-heavy, sequencing midi only shouldn't be an issue for a 1.67 ghz G4 computer.

I love it when people run "dated" software on "dated" machines. I have this old laptop with Live3 and use it sometimes, audio only, lot's of clip-envelope-editing, never crashes, old school ... ;-)

wasnt 5 after the change over to intel processors, so 1-5 should run grand on the old machine, i dunno what do you need to get outta live?
id run the oldest version you could get away with 5/6 is what id run.

still run 5 on an old imac g4 no problem, with renoise, some other stuff thats not on my main machine
its nice to make music in a different environment
Anything at my disposal..

Thanks,

I only have a license for Live Lite 5.2, then full licenses for Live 6, 7, 8.

I think the number of tracks and clips limitation in Lite would not work for me.

Unless there's a massive performance advantage, I don't think I want to work out how to buy a full Live 5 license. But if there is a difference then I would.

This will be a dedicated MIDI recorder and sequencer, no audio running.

Still not sure what the best thing to install is.....

Or just use Live 8?

I got as far as Live 8 Suite on a 1MB 17" G4 powerbook (1.8 GHz I think). Used it as a performance machine with 8 tracks of audio clips and about 3 native effects on each track.

Also used it for simple composing when out and about. Usually got as far as a drum rack, a couple of instances of operator or sampler and maybe one of the more power hungry suite instruments before I needed to start freezing tracks.

Depends what instruments you need to use.

I ran Live 6 and 7 on my old G4 1.67 powerbook..
Up to about 15 midi tracks - all with insturments and efx.

I say try 6... see how it goes... try 7 if it goes well. repeat.
2.8ghz Quad Mac, Live 9.77, Remote25, Maschine 1, Fa-66 optical link, Samson 65a. Dog hair.. lots.
