following/ syncing live set to live played music

Post by dorsch » Sun Aug 14, 2011 10:07 am

ableton should integrate a functionality/ plug in

so your computer will sync automatically to any live played music,
instead of sending metronome to your drummer/ band members.

it is possible!

and it should be a new feature FOR ALL users!
and it should be a integrated feature inside LIVE!

Oh, wow. This would be an incredible feature.

Are you sure that this is possible?

Hi,

I'm Simon, the guy who made the video above.

Yes, I think it's possible to build a device like that.
Of course it would be impossible to invent one device that is able to analyze ANY music (from rock&pop, classical to improvised music - from drums, melody/harmony instrument to a whole band).
But with my approach you don't have to analyze anything in order to follow the music. It simply finds repeating structures.

So it would be important that:

1. The user realizes instantly what the device is made for; what it can do (e.g. follow more or less looped music) and what not (e.g. follow a softly played shaker).
2. In those circumstances where it works, that it works properly and safe.
3. That it gets along with only few knobs and sliders.

(to 2nd: That's why it's not possible to do it with M4L. The abilities to take control over live's transport are not good enough according timing and precicion. So it would need to be integrated more deeply.)

Cheers,
Simon
