2011 Macbook Pro - any heating issues???

I have always been a desktop PC user, but I'm about to jump ship with a 2011 Macbook pro for gig purposes.

Is anyone is using a 2011 macbook pro....

Could you please comment on any heating issue's (even if it's all SFA) what kinda load your putting your machine through e.g. midi/samples/vst instruments/plug-ins(especially reverbs) etc.

No issues whatsoever with Mac Book Pro 2.2Ghz QC 15" . Also, it's quiet enough. Quieter than my previous 13" blackbook (last blackbook model)

My 2011 MBP17 (2.3Ghz version) has been on for the past couple of hours working on a large set in Live (CPU use 40-60% and on all day serving as a wifi media streamer and adhoc 3G access point for iphone and ipad - Im in bodrum in turkey on hols, temp in here about 32C (34C outside - no air con - windows all open etc) and its been absolutely fine. Fans wirring away, but not particularly loud, machine around heat sinks is of course hot to touch, but not untouchable - seems quite happy.

I guess if its happy in this moderate heat - should be fine in most studio environments

I guess it’s all relative. When my MBP (2011 I7) is being worked at around 40% with fans are blaring, the laptop gets very hot to the touch. Of course it’s not too hot to the touch, but I certainly would not put my cheek on it.

Here is the thing, the laptop does not get to a point where think it will melt but that high heat throughout the whole casing is only causing harm to the rest of the components. I have had 2 hard drives fail on me in the past and I am almost 100% sure they are due to the excessive heat that is produced by the laptop.

Here is something to think about, the Unibody design of the Macbook pro was introduced October 2008. That is 35 months ago and according to Moore’s law, computer speeds double every 18 months. As such, the chips in these MBP’s are about 4 times faster they were back in 2008. Sure the energy consumption has decreased somewhat but I do not believe it is by a factor of 4.

My point here is that neither these cases nor the cooling system have been designed for the power of the chips they have right now. The big roomer is that in early 2012 Apple will introduce a completely overhauled MBP which should address this issue. For anyone looking to buy one, I would say hold off until next year.

I just got a referb MBP 2011 15" quad a couple weeks ago and no heating issues have come up. My pre unibody 2008 15 MBP core duo, gets hot as hell.

No heating issue on a Macbook Pro 13" with i5

I have a 2011 2.53 GHz, i5, with 4 GB of memory and I have not experienced any issues whatsoever due to overheating. I use Ableton pretty much daily for hours on end, with a lot of my sets hitting the 50% mark on CPU usage.

Like someone mentioned, I wouldn't want to put my cheek on the bottom of my computer after using it for hours, but sitting here at my desk I don't notice the heat at all.

For a computer that's worth more than my car, you'd expect that it would have no major issues, especially with something like a little bit of heat.
