Is Guitar Dead?

Yes, I hate to say it but it needs reviving quickly! Old fashioned instruments suck!

No, even though a new version ain't been released since... Live 7? (and that only tunes itself which I could do fine already).

Don't really care, I lost interest a long time ago (around Van Halen's heyday).

Is Guitar Dead?

Post by Piplodocus » Tue Aug 23, 2011 10:16 am

I've been wondering like a lot of people here probably, when will the next version of the guitar come out.

After centuries of not much happening it got electrified in the 1930's. Then went solid body in the 1940s. The 1970's brought the floyd rose trem, so tuning was more stable after dive-bombing. The early 90's then brought the Parker Fly with glass-fibre reinforced thin resonant woods and graphite fingerboards with stainless frets. Then 2007 brought the Gibson Robot self tuning guitar. Nothing's happened since though.

Should I give up on the guitar and play only synths instead? It doesn't have any new noises, and no-one's invented any new techniques for decades.

:D

it's not the tool you have, but how you use it... maybe it's time to find new techniques?

GUITAR is not dead and never WILL!
No keyboard/sample/synthesys can emulate that unique sound!

no kidding. i've been waiting for proper microtuning support, when are Gibson going to get off their *$^%*# and give the users what they want?

i think i'm going to switch to trombone instead. what do you think? i know there will be a learning curve.

I find making music on a guitar so easy and intuitive it can feel like cheating as compared to the PC/DAW method I use these days.

Quite profound that really. :|

Almost feels like using loops sometimes as those scales etc... have been in my head for ever....

And, with the amazing new FX available I can sound a million miles away from the Less Paul copy and 15 watt practise amp I started on in 1982 (with maybe a distortion peddle, chorus and cry baby added along the way)!

I need to get the old bats out more I reckon...Maybe make a whole tune written entirely on guitar and bass - drums included!!.

w.

To add: the guitar need not be improved; the design is a solid as the design of piano keys. You can add funky gizmo's but the fundamental needed is there. Like chess vs. electronic chess. Same rules with some tech added. Not a game changer which is how it will stay I hope.

the modern guitar was invented by italians, it was called “Cithara”. The Romans introduced it in Spain in 40 AD. Then, when Spain was occupied by arabs, they developed it better and created the guitar as we know it.

I have a big spool of pickup wire and a bunch of dead pickups.
I started thinking last night : why don't I wind my own hex pickup?!

So, the guitar's not dead, but it will be when I'm finished with it.

It's been around 40 years since the first double necked guitar. When are we going to get a third neck, damn it?
