Dithering with VSTi

Post by GilJ » Thu Sep 29, 2011 1:55 pm

Hi,
I have a Live project using only virtual instruments (Kontakt, Battery, Massive, Imposcar etc.)
And I would like to export each virtual instrument into 16bit or 24bit wav files (in order to mix into another DAW for example)
Do I need to apply dithering when exporting, please?

Thank you,
GilJ.

Only if you're going from 24 or 32bit to 16, and you're not going to use those files again in th DAW.

Thank you for your quick reply Tarekith!

Just to be sure I understood: if I want to export a midi track playing a virtual instrument, into a 24bit wav file for example (to be used in another DAW for mixing etc.), I don't need to dither then?

Another question: we need to dither only when exporting to 16bit (not necessary when exporting to 24bit?)?

Cheers,
GilJ.

Correct for both questions. It's the very last thing you do to audio before its ready for release basically.
