usb hubs

Post by jellycaster » Thu Oct 06, 2011 12:56 pm

any suggestions on which are the best / ones to avoid?

also, is it safe to assume that they can handle multiple midi controllers and there is no conflict over having different midi devices connected through one port?

cheers

Buy one that has a power plug so it doesn't draw power from the computer.

I've had this one: http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Port-Deskt ... B004Q3RUFK
for a couple years and it's worked just fine the entire time. As previously stated, you'll need a powered hub unless all your controllers have their own power source (are not bus powered)

Just make sure its USB 2 There are still some cheaper crappy USB 1 hubs around. Avoid those.

I've been using a 4 port Dlink without problems

Apparently you need to be careful about mixing usb 1 devices on with USB 2 devices since the performance can degrade. This might be an issue for example if you plug in a USB audio interface and an old mouse together.

They have been on and off hard to find even over here lately. Hopefully demand is just higher than supply, it would be a shame to see these go out of production!
