Taaloopa,

That makes sense. I really didn't start using ableton for live performance until 8 came out. Before then, everything live was with my rc-50. I looked into looping with clips like Kid Beyond does, but it confused me too much at the time.

The looper device is definitely sound on sound, but what sets it apart from the hardware loopers is that the number of them are limited only by cpu and ram. If you treat each looper like a single clip, then you have parameters that can be automated like undo/redo.

Here's an example:
1. Audio Effect racks are nice. load up 5 loopers (each with their own chain midi range), set top row of foot pedal to different chain selector parameters and the bottom row to rec/od/stop,undo/redo, multiply, reverse, and clear. Repeat both steps in the next bank for another effects rack with 5 more loopers until you run out of banks/computer freaks out (whichever is first). This would allow you to still switch between multiple loops instantly.

On the other hand, building an all new set is daunting, especially when you have got a nice workflow already from years of tweaking. :)

booksofbokonon,

Thanks for that - starting to understand how that works & will give it a try when I get some time, though yes, building a new workflow from scratch is a bit daunting!

My method works well for me - just the midi undo function would be a nice option.

Sounds like the main advantage of the looper method would be the undo function - any other advantages you can point out?

I guess drawbacks would be more cpu usage - running 5 loopers in a track must take up more cpu than recording straight into track clips.
I tend to use a lot of fx processing, so try to reserve cpu for that.

Good to know of different methods of working - one of the things I really appreciate about Live is it's flexibility and how it can be set up to individual workflows - I'm sure there are others here using Live for looping with different methods from these too.

Just checked out your soundcloud - none of your looping material there...would be interested to hear what you're doing.

I liked the Ghost Story track.

Taaloopa,

If I had figured out looping into clips before 8 came out, I definitely would still be doing it that way. To tell you the truth, most of the stuff we play live is so rehearsed and moves so fast that I rarely would have a chance to reloop something. If I do blunder, which definitely happens, I either run with it because it doesn't sound too bad or I just delete it and go on.

Can you automate your loop to play backwards? If so, the only advantage that I am aware of is the undo. All those loopers are a bit taxing for the computer, I run six loopers, NI piano and epiano, gearbox, altiverb, simpler, and tons of delays on all of my instruments. My old core 2 duo macbook runs at about 33%, but I don't feel that the bar is accurate because when I add one or two more things it jumps to 60%...

Yeah, I need to update my signature. My soundcloud page is now my composition stuff (Im an undergrad music comp major.) Thanks for the kind words about the ghost story sketches.

My rocknroll stuff can be found on my band pages. It's all heavily loop based, especially the first album. I play all the guitar, cello, and most of the synth/key stuff:

Do you have any of your music online?

Not sure about automating loops to play backwards - I don't think so since the clip doesn't exist until you record it - you can reverse once recorded with a single click.

Someone else may know better about this - perhaps using dummy clips or something.

I don't use any automation in my live set, preferring to do everything manually & have control & option to be flexible in the moment.

Thanks for the links - will check those out this weekend.

My music is online here: http://www.jonsterckx.co.uk - mainly 'world music' - my looping stuff is there under 'Drumscapes Live sampling' ( also on http://www.drumscapes.net )

Cheers

Very cool music! I really like how you make a simple jaw harp sound like some kind of evolving synth. Is all your pitched material derived from drums and jaw harp? Your setup seems very polished. I wouldn't change a thing about how you loop. Nice workflow. A lot of looping I see (and used to do myself) requires too much of a break in the music, almost as if you were putting the flow of the piece on hold to record something. You don't do this at all. Kudos!

I use the word automate too much. I really meant midi/key map an ability (in this case "reverse") and that totally answers my question.

Thanks for your comments booksofbokonon, much appreciated.

Yes, everything is derived from drums, jaw harp and vocal percussion. All drones, synth sounds etc are made by processing the live sampled audio.

Sined - http://soundcloud.com/drumscapes/sined - is created from the 3 vocal samples at the beginning which are then sent through lots of fx processing.

Sorry, took me a few days to find time to listen to yours & get back to you.

Some nice tracks there. Nice atmospheres & good playing.

The ones with Cello appeal to me the most, particularly Galapagos - nice glissing! Nice cello playing on 'Freshness fades..." too.

Cheers,
Jon.
