Double mastering ! Double Power !

Post by The Carpet Cleaner » Tue Oct 25, 2011 11:44 pm

yea.

I did a demo track. I put a quick very loud master on it.

I then load the track in a new project, with about the same mastering chain.

And it's fucking huge.

it sounds like SebastiAn ultra compressed and painful sound.

So, is it actually a common habit to do compress, then limit.... then compresses again and limit ? I find the result too much, but if you master twice with softer settings, it might sounds pretty "modern".

What you though on that?

Sounds like a pretty bad idea!

If you can master right the first time doing it a second time is guaranteed to make it worst.

Imagine some pro might get a benefit of lining up more then 1 limiter in there mastering chain with different settings or type.

Until you can do it right the first time around, I wouldnt even think about it.
Actually learning to mix first before you attept to master.

Nothing on you master

Turn up the amp if you thinks it too quite...
Master after everything sounds good.
Turn the amp back down and master once.

well most of that kind of processing quickly becomes technically redundant / useless. limiting already limited material is not a "make magically better" trick, which seems to be what you're hoping for-- but this is math, not magic. a hard limit at -.02 is a hard limit at -.02, done once or twice or a hundred times. pushing the input will just result in more compression on the already compressed signal; mix down and look at your waveform -- it's gonna be nasty. but I get the feeling that you're not too aware / concerned with what these devices are actually -doing- beyond what you're hearing from them...so as for "thoughts" on your experiment, I guess I'd say, from a technical standpoint it's junk, but there's sometimes something to be said for the "trying out wack shit for wack results" approach, too. but I don't think your going to find experiments in this realm very fruitful.

Well I'm actually aware of what those devices do, and it was an "accident" to have the demo limited again. But what I liked about the result is that it brings back and pump all the noise between the beat, it is like having a soft white noise pumping, I found that quite nasty indeed but pretty interesting as well.

i weep for your ears(and your transients and dynamic range)
but if you produce white noise, it might be a good technique

Pumping compressed (limited!) and distorted white noise, please. And also URS saturator @100% on every channel off course.

if you like the texture maybe it would be cool to have that chain in parallel in a rack, one channel preserving the transients and the other squishing the life out of it... best of both worlds.

my advice? everyone that pointed out the technical "wrongs' make sense, TECHNICALLY... sonically? I say if it sounds great, it sounds great, PERIOD. There are no "transients" or "correct" mastering techniques when you hear a live band jamming... I'm not criticizing anyone who pointed out the "wrong" of your discovery, but I'm pointing out that they are only "right" some of the time. There are no absolute rules, repeat, none, to making good music. There is common sense, and even things you may follow 1 percent or 99 percent of the time because it makes sense or is a guideline or you like it. There is always an exception, always, a "crazy" person, an "idiot" that becomes the next so called "genius".
