did you have to solve some conflicts between old/new objects in Max when you have tested it?
As soon as I launch launchpad step sequencer from Novation and I try to connect launchpad the system freezes immediately...

My system crashed as I attempted to open Launchpad Step Sequencer, for example.
It's working fine for me as long as I use patches that contain only Max 5 objects, so your first statement isn't true.
Max 5: Launchpad Step Sequencer works fine.
Max 6: Launchpad Step Sequencer cause system crashes.
Conclusion: Max 6 isn't fully compatible with Live yet because (AFAIK) Launchpad Step Sequencer contains only Max 5 objects.

In my world it's really that simple...

support ticket suggested + use max5 with Live

compatibility doesn't work like this, btw.
To say "a patch using only max5 object" doesn't really make sense because some objects (I guess a lot) would have been improved, modified.
It means, as we talked about before ("conflicts"), that the system may have to choose beetween the old and new version of a same objects.

so even if we use an old patch, if for some dark reasons/causes the system cannot solve the conflicts because it freezes or smthg like that, the result is: indeed, whatever the compatibility suppositions or not... some could not work.

I'd suggest to go to preferences > Files Folder > Application Max
and to choose Max5 folder .... and waiting for support answer :?

Well I just opened the Launchpad Step Sequencer device in the Max 6 editor and it is not crashing, so apparently your world is a little more complicated than you think.

Just got back from playing a gig using the latest release of Max 6 in Max 4 Live. No problems whatsoever.

Was largely using old patches interfacing hardware controllers with ableton, not too much audio processing and no video work, but smooth as butter for what I needed. Don't think I'll be going back :).

Could you please be a little bit more specific about this future thing?

I wouldn't hold my breath for a specific answer.

My guess is it won't come before Live 9.

I don't care about the live 9 duke nukem fuzz. I just want to know if i already own m4l and buy max6 now, will i have to pay for any other upgrade to properly use max6 in ableton live?

you should write to support.
they'll answer or find a workaround.

btw, you can switch max5 & 6 in live.
I mean, it isn't blocking you.

thanks for your nice reply. Unfortunately the support didn't want to give me a workaround for avoiding licensing fees

I didn't talk about that.
I meant if you had some problems with your max update which would have crashed things on your system.

things will come, man.
we have to be patient.

Are there specific features from Max 6 that you're wanting to use in M4L?

I don't think there is a problem. I did not have to download a new version of M4L. I got Ableton 8.2.6 and then just switched the Max path in the prefs to Max 6 and no problems.

I have used some of the newer modules in M4L and it is fine - here is a basic test just using the new filterdesign module and a gen~ with a flanger. It worked as expected.

running any m4l device with max6 standalone works for me without crashing, yet is unusable since lives audio-engine coughs and rustles with what sounds like a constant buffer underrun.

regardless of the buffer settings or whether i use an onboard soundcard or a firewire interface.

back to max5
