this started as a "just for the hell of it" sequence in which I was trying to re-create parts of skinny puppy's 'worlock.' then it sort of morphed into it's own, original work of mine, but with numerous musical nods to worlock still intact, if not out-rightly ripped-off so credit due to cevin there . but in any case, its a clear nod to the good old late 80's/early 90's industrial sound.

all made in live 8 + assorted vst's, as usual.

This track took itself a bit too seriously for me, but It really does sound like vintage industrial. It sounds exactly like something out of my Jr. High days. I don't say that as an insult. I mean, it REALLY sounds authentic.

I never understood what that saying meant. How does a track take itself too seriously?

Amigo - I'm not sure how to put it in writing. It's probably just a taste thing. To me, this song sounds dated, which in itself isn't a bad thing. But what I get from the track is that the author is really into it, really thinks it rocks. Now I have no idea what the intentions of the author was, but the SONG seems to radiate this aura.

I live in Japan, which isn't known for its awesome music scene (well except for the avant-guard scene in Osaka which is MIND BLOWING). I see these really lame rock bands on TV playing shit that would sound bad in the early 90's and they're so into what they're doing, which leads to harsher criticism from me. I'm using an extreme example here. I never thought this song was lame when I listened to it.

I could be way off base, and I absolutely mean no disrespect to mholloway. I'm not trying to rip apart his tune, his thread just ended up being where I discussed this (but then again, I'd love to read some serious deconstruction of my music, weather it was positive or negative). He's a big boy, I'm sure he can handle it!

Now that begs the question what could make it less serious? I have no idea. It's a subtle thing. There's a lot of bands that deal with a darker sound (check out Smash My Face In on myspace), but come off as a bit more laid back.

And thanks, amigo for asking me. I had a hard time backing up an offhanded remark I made, but it was fun. What did I discover? It's just a taste thing!

I didn't mean to highlight your remark but wanted the saying explained and you gave a more than adequate explanation so thank you for that.

Now to decide whether it is cool to have a track that takes itself too seriously.......

Thanks for the comments guys, and very interesting discussion, re: "taking itself too seriously" in context of a song. I can relate to what vlantis is saying, not necessarily with my song in particular, but in general with the idea of songs that can convey a feeling of overconfidence or even smugness, which doesn't arise from any specific, quantifiable element of the tune, but rather just something about the overall presentation. The vocals, however, are probably the most likely area to convey this sort of thing. A lot of industrial vocals (mine included) often lean heavily toward a kind of "evil bad-ass" vibe that can pretty easily come across as pretentious or contrived.

Then again, such things are all pretty darn subjective . But one thing isn't subjective -- when it comes to very deliberately setting out to build a decidedly "old school" or late-80's industrial sound, I'm guilty as charged! I'm still sad that most industrial bands of that era have either quit, or maybe worse, turned to electro-pop, idm, trance, whatever.

I noticed in this beautifully done track was that with so much emotional story I was waiting for the high vocal tension to build to a yell! Wishing to be slammed back down on my knees with resolve!

Thought the parts you did were slightly cleaner than SP possibly slower too but just a odd guess.

Other thoughts; When people say "old school Industrial" or "Vintage Sound" It makes me feel like the work isn't as valid or that its not as cool now than it was at the time. But aren't all of these sounds not used somewhat today? Are they not the classic staples in this genre? because I love that sound! I grew up with those sounds!, just like a guitar still sounds like a guitar, a piano still sounds like a piano. So much of this sound should sound classic!

Maybe its just me not realizing how other people view these musical tastes.

This is a really good point, and something I'm going to work on with future compositions -- I've noticed that when recording vocals, I usually just find a sort of baseline mood/tone, and then just stick with it from start to finish of the song. I need to push myself to ramp things up somewhere in there, to create some real dynamics with the vocal presentation. Thanks for the observation, it has got me thinking. As for your point about old-school sounds, I totally agree. Certainly for me the 80's/90's industrial synth sound isn't just purely nostalgic, it's still very fresh to me, and can still be evolved while retaining its roots in that 'sound'.

Cool. Dig it a lot. Kinda takes me back to Thursday nights at the Dungeon, when they used to play loads of goth and industrial.

What kind of drum sound is that classic industrial sound you've nailed spot on there? Is it a particular model/emulation of some classic or is it more the way the sound is post processed?

On this track (and a lot of my stuff in general) I'm mostly using all the synths from the KORG: Legacy Collection. They are perfect for this style of music. The Mono/Poly is definitely my favorite.
