rough "warehouse techno" sound
rough "warehouse techno" sound
hi... desperately trying to find the link i want to post as a guide for what im looking for. BUT IN THE MEANTIME has anyone got any ideas on how to get that rough reverby warehouse techno sound (think surgeon-esque kind of thing/ ostgut ton etc)?? i want a dirty (not "dubstep dirty") kind of sound whereas what i am making at the moment is very much clean house music. any advice appreciated.

I've been making and playing techno in warehouses for the last 15 years. I'd love to help... Can you be a bit more specific? What have you got so far? What are you missing? What can I do to help? Your question is pretty broad as it stands...

http://soundcloud.com/samirh/2-containers/s-QF9j9 this is my first real attempt at the kind of techno i want to achieve. it just doesnt have a very big sound. and sounds quite "nice" for want of a better word. (to my ears at least) i'm wondering how to make it sound rougher around the edges.

Consider the liberal use of compression (read: use lots of compression).
Don't be afraid of too much reverb. Sidechain the reverb and EQ out the lowest of the low end
Use tape delays or dub delays with lots of feedback. Put a limiter on the feedback so that you can make it scream
Also, slow the tempo - think driving rather than funky. Subtle shifts in drums and percussion
blah blah blah
Over production is your friend in these siutations

Re: rough "warehouse techno" sound
definitely the destruction of dynamics in the drums and bass and dynamic distortion .. squeeze the hell out of it .. heavy reverbs on mid mid hi and hi synth sounds... djadonis206 pretty much has the idea though ..
but heavy compression is the key to that dirty techno sound .. also bring the kick way up front thats what gives you your drive. it will also influence how the compressor will shape the overall sound aswell by making the rest pump.
set the compressor up with a longish attack. then the sub of the kick, after the initial crack, will trigger the comp and make a sort of off beat pumping,
that when done right, will make the track just roll along

Massive fan of that sound myself. managed to catch quite a few the Surgeon's dj sets throughout the 90's, truly awesome. Anyway, You may want to check this thread here: http://www.mnml.nl/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=65500 where there quite a bit of discussion on this subject.
On a side note Loving Planetary Assault Systems new album The messenger at the moment. Pure quality.
Plus the Surgeon posted an excellent DJ set up here http://soundcloud.com/dynamic-tension/s ... hine-trouw that you can download, I have been hammering this in the car and at the gym.

Another useful thread:

This style uses lots of big hall reverbs and one of the few that uses reverb on the kick (sometimes). Also lots of overdrive/bitcrushing etc from memory.

Re: rough "warehouse techno" sound
Try reverb on the kick but sidechain it with the input signal from the kick, with auto-filter.
works wonders

and lots and lots of feedback send-return chains.
