Help needed - recommend some drum n bass tunes to draw from

Post by dominicw78 » Thu Dec 15, 2011 11:12 am

I need to make a happy/positive drum n bass like track for a project however, dnb is not an area I know well and was wondering if anyone can recommend me some tunes or artist to draw inspiration from? The track I'm making is sports related and needs to positive, melodic, not to heavy/dark, but still energetic.

If anyone can think of stuff that fits that bill I would be highly appreciative of you recommendations.

"Liquid DnB" is probably your best bet. Check out stuff on the label "Hospital Records".

Disclaimer: I haven't followed DnB closely for the past decade or so; I was into it from the early 90s until about 2002ish. All of my recommendations will reflect this, and I'll leave it to others to suggest more contemporary tunes.

+1 on John B's "Salsa" and the flipside from that release, "Slipstream". (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTK0A3oT9aE) Both tracks are lighthearted and energetic.

Hospital Records does exactly what you're trying to do. High Contrast's first album in particular has some incredible energy. Here's the big cut off that album, "Return of Forever" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoSscshAG-4 and my favorite "Music Is Everything" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwmtZEhhjiM

Shy Fx has always made (mostly) happy tunes full of energy. His work with T Power has been especially accessible, with a pop flavor.

V Recordings is worth checking out; they've consistently done dancefloor pleasing tunes but have drawn in elements other labels haven't used as much. If you find their main label stuff too hard or whatever, check their sublabel Liquid V.

And finally: LTJ Bukem and the Good Looking/Looking Good records crew, who have put out an impressive catalog of melodic and uplifting tunes. I'm showing my age here, but it's hard to top 1995's Maya Angelou-sampling "Horizons": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8d9Zg1sAhls
