Re: What if Ableton Live wouldn't exist...?
Honestlly not much would change.
I mainly play softsynths or guitar live, so the rest of the set could easily be loaded into Mainstage or DP7.
I mainly use Live to work out how long scenes go on before changing, out of about 15 songs 2 are random Live as instrument songs, the rest are backing tracks and soft synths or guitar-Guitar Rig.
Don't get me wrong I love Live, but it isn't any game changer for me as much as fun.

Practice with Live.simmerdown wrote:so it goes huh? my resolution is going to be to not open Live til ive practiced 1 hour...masterblasterofdisaster wrote:That's exactly what happened to me. Hmmmm.
thatll probably last about 12 minutes, haha
I have a template with a kit playing a swing beat, a piano or Rhodes sound and multiple lanes of clips that cycle through the circle of fifths, or play ii-V-Is that cycle through the circle of fifths. Run arpeggios over them, then walk a bass line, then work licks.
And most recently I record some funk/soul bass line, loop it, and then sit down at the kit (I just now started playing drums after 20 years of bass, brass and, voice).
Live can be a great practice tool.

I practice with it, but in a rather undisciplined way, I suppose. What you describe is a much more structured approach than the way I've been going about it. Good ideas, there.stringtapper wrote:Practice with Live.simmerdown wrote:so it goes huh? my resolution is going to be to not open Live til ive practiced 1 hour...masterblasterofdisaster wrote:That's exactly what happened to me. Re: What if Ableton Live wouldn't exist...?
I just started picking up the geetar again and wanted to check something with Clyphx, which was to be able to hit a pedal on the FCB1010 to record the 1st four clip slots on the track, then you can cycle through them after recording. Then set up the same thing for other tracks for bass, synth, etc. It works great once you turn off the record countdown in preferences and set the global quantize to taste (I have 1 bar).
Try it, paste this in an empty clip (not on the first track) and map it to a pedal:
[] (PSEQ) 1/Play 1 ; 1/Play 2 ; 1/Play 3 ; 1/Play 4
(if you have clyphx of course)
The cool thing is you can skip to whatever clip you want to play just by number of taps, so you don't have to hear it consecutively, like the 4th clip may sound better after the 2nd one, etc.

I'm fine doing live sets with hardware, and for producing there's plenty of DAWs out there still

I would be trapped with Sonar Cakewalk and rely everything on my RS7K and MC-909 combo.

I would have a little, private cry, then move on. Not sure what to as I've been happy with Live since v3, so not bothered to look elsewhere, but I'm sure I'd replace it somehow. Any DAW could run my electribes and my 303 and they all have a session view now, right?

I would want my goddamn money back
Re: What if Ableton Live wouldn't exist...?
I don't play guitar very much now but I've made a few "practice sets" in my time. Things like recording strums in various keys and improvising over them, or making backing tracks.stringtapper wrote:I have a template with a kit playing a swing beat, a piano or Rhodes sound and multiple lanes of clips that cycle through the circle of fifths, or play ii-V-Is that cycle through the circle of fifths. I'd probably have to go back to my old job, working on the Large Hedron Collider, and play Indie Rawk in my spare time. Or I'd just go back to the bottle...
Better not to think about it.
