How do I get that phat sound?

Post by AaronShaver » Fri Dec 16, 2011 10:12 pm

Wondering if any of the more experienced users here could tell me how to get that phat sound from Ableton. Thanks.

holy shit  @ turd polisher.

do youtube searches for "how to make this sound" and for mastering different instruments and spend hours getting sounds you like. honestly, no producer stole his first DAW off torrents and wrote a killer song in a half an hour. if you work quit the rest of your life outside work and spend it making music.

seriously though, try stacking different waveforms on eachother and pitching them up for big sounding synths and dont put too much, if any, spread on your bass tracks. among other things..

Some examples of what you consider "phat" would probably help steer this conversation in a direction that may be somewhat constructive. Otherwise you will continue to receive half-cocked answers, but typically you will want to start with good source material(samples, instruments[native and VSTs]), you will want this material to sit comfortably amongst each other - harmonics compliment the timbre of the overall mix, a gentle squeeze by a compressor tuned to help your track breathe, maybe some saturation and finally a little gain from a limiter to put the phatness in your face.

I personally like to go out of the box for some character, but this is not absolutely necessary.

Aaron, I am listening to track two and your kick is panned left for some reason. Bring your kick and bass to the center to "phatten" it up a bit and let all those other cool sounds float around them. Side note, great graphics.

It all starts with good sounds and a good mix.
