Controlling Live with iPad2...?

Post by jmouse » Sun Dec 18, 2011 1:29 am

Hey Abes.

Just got an iPad2 and was wondering about the best way to control Live.?
I've heard about Touchable and have TouchOsc.
I'd prefer to use a USB connection rather than wi-fi.
I've looked at a few posts on this, but am still unclear.I'd also like to be able to use the iPad synth apps and set up midi tracks for them.
I have an Akai synth station 25 and I was wondering if it were possible to connect the iPad to it?
I was thinking of seeing if there was an adaptor that converts USB to docking connector so I can plug the iPad
Directly in to the ss25.
Then USB out of the ss25 into the Mac.
Has anyone tried this?
Yes I think I remember seeing a larger controller keybd that you can plug an iPad into..
But Ive spent me dosh,so I'm just looking for a workaround.

Appreciate you're thoughts ..
Merry Christmas and H.N.Y

Yes, you can use the camera connector kit to connect class-compliant USB MIDI devices to the iPad, for apps that use Core MIDI.

Touchable does a really good job too - but you have to use wireless connection, what isn't a problem at all when using an adhoc network (even works with my Win7 machine without problems).

Take a look at touch-able.com to get further information and setup-details. - And be sure/careful to only visit "touchable.com" (without the minus) if you are out for boops and bitches! ;)

Could anybody tell me with the lemur app if you can use it normally in live without m4l? I know m4l opens up the possibilities to download/customize templates but I would just like to midi map my effects to some parameters on the ipad because i already have an apc40. I'm having a hard time figuring out if i should get touchable or lemur (which definitely looks to be the more fun of the two).

Hi all
Thanks again for your input.
Hey toph .I'm leaning towards "touchable" but it would be good if it worked over USB midi.
If I got the "iRig midi,(already have a USB midi interface)..might that work?

I'm quite sure, it won't. But why don't you contact the Touch-Able guys and ask them directly? - They seem to be very responsive (sometimes they also reply here in the forum). I would drop them a line and ask. Maybe they can tell you about their plannings regarding the non-wifi thing too.

Yeah..could do..
Also just heard about the IRig midi
could be the way to go..?
I mean basically all I want to do is be able to use a controller keyboard to connect to the iPad and record
Midi notes into Live as you would an external synth.
And also to control Live functions from the pad using Touchable or Lemur.

Why don't you connect you keyboard directly to the computer running Live and connect the iPad via wifi?

I could do that but I've heard that the latency is better over usb.
Not sure about stability of wireless.
Had trouble before establishing ad hoc networks.
That said.....it may come to that.

With a jailbreak iPad and an app called MyWi, you'll be instantly connected (called USB Tethering).
