Roland Juno 106 and Live

I'm not sure how long the voice chips last. My number 1 chip has been broken for years but the rest have been fine. (there's ways of still using the 106 even with a dud chip . I bought a clone from analogue renaissance but they are really hard to remove the old chip. I reckon I should be able to fix it but it may take me a bit of time.

I love the sound of the 106. It's my favourite out of my arsenal of 5 synths. I use it on everything. Super easy to program. I mainly use it for stabby bass sounds.

if one chip fails, can you still use the other five voices?

It depends, I never could because I had one voice chip that hiss and crackled, another wouldn't stop sustaining. Merry Christmas fellow audio geeks

Mine was useable because the voice that was broken just had the filter fully open. It was useable but annoying. Absolutely fine If you are playing a phrase that only has 5 notes

Essentially, he restores or replaces any broken voice chips and applies a fix to those that haven't expired yet so that they should be good to go for another 20+ years. I haven't received the restored circuit board back yet, but, he has plenty of positive reviews and has been very responsive and helpful so far. I'll post back when I have the restored chip installed back in my Juno and let you know how it works.

gutted - the seller ended up flogging it to someone else - altho i swear he just put the price up on gumtree. looking now at the jp-8000 - different beast i know, but any opinions on this?

Great synth and IMO a much better choice. It was my first, purchased new in '97. I sold it after getting a Jupiter 6 and Juno 60 thinking I now had better with the originals than the modern emulation of the classics.... anyway, long story short, I now have a JP-8080 and don't miss the Jupiter or Juno at all. I would suggest also looking into the V-Synth as they're selling for just a bit more and they're arguably the greatest synth that Roland has yet made. It is essentially the JP-8000 merged with the VP-9000 and a suite of COSM effects and it can be turned into a D-50 and a very cool voice processor with the additional VC cards. With the V-Synth there isn't much reason for me to keep the JP-8080 (or VP-9000) but I really enjoy the way it works and it's also nice being able to split duties amongst the dedicated gear so that I can use the V for more interesting tasks.
