can you say "smoke weed" on a song for radio

Post by nuxnamon » Mon Dec 26, 2011 11:37 pm

so I'm finishing a song but a part of the lyrics say "smoke weed"... before i send this out to get mastered, i'm wondering if i should just clean it up first? I'm in the USA but i'm not sure if that's considered explicit and not suitable for radio.. ideally, i'd have 2 versions, but i don't want to pay for 2 master versions for just 1 phrase..

if i do clean it up, any suggestions.. i can reverse the clip or just mute it?

I am pretty sure you can, but I do remember some songs muting out the word weed, but that could have been years ago. I am sure someone along the line will tell you if you can't/ask your label/promoter/whatever.

Is your song hit material? Are you planning on spending the money to get your song played on commercial radio? If the answer is yes then you need to reverse or mute the word "weed". If your just looking for DJs to play it on mixshows then you don't have to make an edit.

Oh, lol. The US and its censorship.

Just change the wording, like "smoke meat every day". Makes perfect sense. I mean, who doesn't love smoked meat?

I salute your belief that your song could be played on the radio.

And your belief that radio stations are going to include your song in their rotation of 12 total new songs they play each year.

And that people pay attention to the radio beyond killing the numbing silence during their commute.

*Hug*

OP.. why not spend a morning on the phone to some stations you think might air your tune and find out what their policy is? Probably safer than going on forum hearsay.
