Instructions

Post by doghouse » Tue Feb 24, 2009 2:24 am

I was asked to post instructions on how to set up a Motif ES as a control surface for Live 7.

On the Motif ES:

UTILITY->MIDI->OTHER->MIDI IN/OUT set to USB
UTILITY->CTL ASN->REMOTE set Mode A to Cubase Port 4 and Mode B to OFF

Connect the Motif ES USB To Host to your computer and launch Live.

In Live 7:

1. Go to Preferences -> MIDI Sync2. Set Control Surface to Mackie Control
3. In the input/output section set Input: Mackie Control (Yamaha USB 4) to OFF, OFF, ON and Output: Mackie Control (Yamaha USB 4) to OFF, OFF, ON.

Set the Remote Control switch of the Motif ES to ON (lights up) and you should see Live parameters on the Motif screen. That's it! The Motif ES will now function as a Mackie Control.

Controls:

-- The Motif transport controls the Live transport.
-- The Motif channel select 1-16 and mute/solo buttons perform the same functions in Live.
-- The Motif knobs control pan and the faders volume for four tracks at a time (1-4, 5-8, 9-12, etc.) unless you activate Pan mode which flips the assignment (faders control pan, knobs control volume).
-- The Motif arrow cursor buttons will scroll through Live tracks and scenes.

The Motif ES has a total of six remote control screens using the select buttons next to the knobs/faders. Each brings up a different menu of soft buttons. Most have the same name as the Mackie button name, but some have names specific to Cubase. See page 60 of the Motif ES Data List manual for button definitions. See chapter 22 in the Live 7 manual for Mackie button definitions.

Motif button names that differ from Mackie button names:

Plugins = Devices
Cycle = Loop On/Off
PunchIn = PunchIn (but no PunchOut!)
Edit = Return
Project = View Browser
Mixer = View Detail
Master = Draw Mode
Shift = Follow Mixer

Mackie buttons that have no Motif equivalent:

Send
Home
End
Scrub
SMPTE/Beats
ViewArr
BTA
Locator

Motif buttons with no Mackie equivalent:

Instruments (stops all clips)

Hope this helps!!!!

Awesome!
Would the same apply if you have an mlan16e card? (except the
UTILITY->MIDI->OTHER->MIDI IN/OUT set to USB ?)

I can do everything except play the keyboard.
In the sense that the keyboard does not send midi messages to Live 8.
If anyone can help me I would be grateful.

Are you saying that all the remote control features work OK?

Can you post a screen shot of your MIDI preferences?

@ doghouse: thanx for your instructions. I have a yamaha motif ES6 and Live 8 and the remote works fine, except the values for pan and aux-sends in Live.
The value scale of the knobs (control funtion ES 6) do not match with the value scales of the aux-sends and pan in Live 8.
Pan and sends in Live react from center to left or from center to right, but do not use its whole scale from left - right / 0 - 127.

Seems that the motif knobs just send values from 0-64 instead of 127..., I'm not sure about this.

How do you handle this?

@ frydo: keyboard of the Motif ES 6 works here while its Remote function is enabled.
Did you enable Midi-Port Yamaha Motif ES-1 in Live's preferences/Midi|Sync/Track?

Best, Bastian

again:

The 4 encoders of the Motif ES are non endless. So they send just a part of the necessary data for PAN or Send in Lives channels. An endless encoder like the dial (Motif ES) works fine with PAN and Send sending the appropriate data.

Now the Motif controls Live, thats fine so far. The only thing I'm missing, is stopping and restarting from the same point in the timeline. As soon as I stop the transport, restarting causes jumping back of the cursor to the beginning of the song.
I wish an option in the settings of Live, to enable the restart from the last point in the timeline, where the cursor was stopped.
