Building a new computer for Ableton Live recording

I was wondering if a dual-core 3.46 GHZ processor and around 4GB of ram would be enough. It's not one of the newer i-series processors from Intel, but all I'm using this machine for is recording anyways. I'm currently running it on my laptop that contains an i3 and I'm pleased with the performance. Any suggestions or thoughts?

get a quad core. One with a quad cpu in the 2's will go much further than a dual core in the 3's.

you don't need that to run Live. dual core 3.x is nothing to scoff at.


enough for what? are you using other software/VSTs? scoring for film? using massive tracks counts/200 plus?

I usually run around 10 tracks. I record music with it. And only a couple more vsts with it on about 6 of the tracks. I've used as many as 18 tracks before though. But that's pretty much my limit as far as that goes.

don't sweat it. i mean hey if you can get bigger and better go for it, but don't think that YOU HAVE TO have it. that's just gear lust really.

Beyond the chipset, make sure that it runs quietly if you're going to be doing recording in the same room.

An Intel i5 2500k processor with a 4/8 GB of ram , a suitable Motherboard and an SSD will do perfectly for production

I plan on getting an SSD sometime soon to place the OS on. Either that or a new board to hookup.
