Drum Roll or Flam Midi Effect. How do I use them?

Post by LLR » Thu Jan 21, 2010 3:21 am

I really love the drum beat in Simon and Garfunkel's 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTiyLuZO ... L&index=43.

How can I reproduce that snare roll/flam in ableton. I played around with the roll and flam midi effects into a drum rack, but got all kind of stuff triggering all over the place. How do I use those effects, and are they even what I need to recreate a similar beat?

Great drum riff, I'd just sample it cuz it's already isolated. I wouldn't sell it commercially, keep in mind.

It is true the beat is isolated in the original song, but I love the style. I would really love to apply that style, or groove, to a drum rack of my own choosing.

BTW, that "50 ways to make a record" song couldn't even be called a cover. It is a total rip. It seems like a proper cover requires some uniqueness.

:D Love the original one of my fav`s but this made me :D had a certain scharm even though some of the high vocals were a bit ropey - I like blatant sample ripp offs - de la soul ,stetsasonic etc but this more like a cover but not bad is it actually released because if it is the fees must be through the roof !!!

I have Battery 2 and 3 and they have some roll/flam samples but it is hard to find something that'll fit the length of what you want IMHO. So I did some searching and saw this link and tried it and did a 1 bar with 1 snare and it works but needs a bit of tweaking (I set Repeat to 2 and it goes ok but not fast (again, more tweaking on the arp side).

Give it a look if you haven't yet. Pretty simple with Velocity, Arpeggiator and Impulse.

here's a copy of the drum transcription.
maybe you could just pencil it into a midi clip and try it out with your drum rack.

I was just commenting on the roll/flam effect. I haven't heard that song in years so I'd have to find it online to remember the drumming. I think I'm going to use a roll from Battery in Sampler and adjust the braces accordingly when I feel the need to do this. But I am also going to putz around with the covert article which I saved off as a rack.

I would try to edit the sample start for the flam. And its a solo work by Paul Simon to be correct here.

I loaded up Kontakt 4 the other day and looked at Snare Enemble and lo and behold it has single, flam and roll hit and roll runs till I release the key = should be just what I am looking for! Now I know I'll have to fiddle with its options to get better sound from its effects but that's when I dig back into it perhaps this weekend to play around some more.

The other option I found in MIDI Toolbox in Live is a roll effect but I am not sure how to work it from a MIDI clip standpoint if i have 1/16th note triplet selected. It didn't add to the note(s) played in the clip. Yet again another thing to look for info on in the manual or in here.
