15,6" fullHD (1920x1080) - too small pixels / PPI....?

Post by golemus » Wed Feb 15, 2012 2:05 am

Has anyone used a 15.6 laptop that has a full hd resolution (1920x1080) with Ableton Live...? It has PPI of abt. 140, so the pixels start to be very small for Win7 usage, or so you might think.

But those of you that have experience, share it please. Can you work with Ableton Live or are the elements already too small? How about internet browser or microsoft office...?, or Windows 7 basic controls like start menu and taskbar.

I was a bit surprised that nowadays you can buy a quadcore fullhd laptop for less than 1000eur (Asus).

Just got myself a 16" quad core i7 laptop that does full HD, and so far so good for Live and most windows programs.

I had to play with the size/font of my desktop icons a bit, and same with some websites (ie: this one!) to get things to a point where I'm not straining my eyes too much.

Overall seems to work well and I can fit Live and a few handy vsts on my screen without feeling too cramped.

I have a 15.6" capable of 1920x1080 and find that everything is too small to work with at that resolution. I have yet to find the ideal compromise with Windows 7 for that screen. I run it at the next setting down from 1920x1080 (don't have it in front of me so I don't know the exact resolution) and the type is still a bit small but I deal with it. I normally run Live on an older 19" external at I believe 1280x900 - much easier to see and work with. I haven't worked with Live that much on just the laptop screen, mostly opening a second instance of a set to reference settings or some mixing/eq tweaking on my home stereo rather than my studio monitors but I've found it workable at the lower resolution.
Hope that helps.. I can post the exact resolution I'm using later. I'm using a Lenovo ThinkPad W520 - I had been looking at a Asus (the one with the external subwoofer - wtf?)when I was researching laptops but went with the Thinkpad based on reviews.

My Asus is capable of 1920x1080, which I run my desktop at, but the first time I opened Ableton I noticed I had to strain my eyes to focus on everything. Obvious, but just change the resolution in the ableton settings. They have a handy zoom function for the Ableton layout.

That way you have a machine capable of HD resolution when you want it (awesome), but Ableton configured to be a little easier on the eyes. 8)

I also have an external monitor hooked up for VST and reference material.

Just checked and I'm running at 1680x1050 which I find more useful than the full 1920x1080.

Native resolution on my new Vaio is 1600 * 900 which seems just right for a 15 inch screen. Any more would be too small for most work IMO - But then my eyes are pretty poor.

Most of the time I hook up a huge screen working at 1920 * 1080.

I don't understand why there's a problem. Control-comma, select "Look/Feel", set the zoom level to whatever you like best.
