Think of a Mac like a house, it gets built then it settles down with use. Like a house, a Mac doesn't need mainteance in all areas at the same time. There are dependancies and interrelated caches, files and scripts. A Mac will purr if you configure it and leave it on for a few days, non-stop.

Great post. I've been using my Max/OSX now for 2 years and still find myself trying to use it the way i grew up using windows.. Old habits die hard, but they eventually die!

Second, permissions. The Disk Utility is a great tool but there is one limitation, it doesn't validate and reset the permissions of the home folder of the user. Use the reset password function to do this.

Use the reset Home folder permissions and ACLs.

How exactly step by step is the best way to do this? Just go to system prefs -> users -> change password? There's got to be more to it, if you could provide a link that explains how to reset home folder permissions that would be great.

Another basic troubleshooting step is a Safe Boot followed by a restart.
