Why are musicians so snarky?

Post by daniel_robert_lahey » Mon Mar 19, 2012 9:28 pm

Honestly, why do musicians have to be so snarky? I'd use much, much stronger language for how I feel about it, but I'm trying to be polite, here. I asked a question that was to me not at all obvious after having searched and searched in the manual. I got a reply with "rtfm" in it, which, unless you know the person and know that it isn't going to be taken wrong is just a really stupid, rude thing to say. Furthermore, the person replying referred me to the wrong page in the manual. I will say one thing, however, that despite the bad attitude they did provide me with a key phrase on which to search which may have guided me to some helpful information related to my problem.

Honestly, people, consider downsizing your ego and consider the possibility that others learn differently than you and may have far less experience. Otherwise, it would be infinitely more helpful for you to "sftu" while giving others who are not always proceeded into the room with their inflated egos the opportunity to offer real assistance instead of proof of their superiority.

Humility is quite probably the most important asset of a musician. Those who don't practice it invariably create bad juju and all too often, bad music.

Counter point: There are a lot of lazy internet dependent people that don’t even bother trying to find out anything for themselves before they just fire off the most basic minimal experience question.

Thus the RTFM brigade for which everybody must suffer.

Musicians?
The human race is 5% trolls by volume.
The internet brings the human race right up close.

I just tried a random experiment
and searched for ANY forum, and chose... tiling forums (for people who are enthusiastic about tiling floors and walls !) Random and non-musical you see.

So, the first thread I hit was sull of rage and had a suspected mult being called out -
" is that you again, have you made another user name, come on,own up,its you aint it"
and a positive war of name calling about something called "dot and dab"
a random tiling enthusiast wrote:Why such hatred for a newbie! lol....i personally screed and blob my tiles...every job is different imo..
Have a great day. and stop the hatred lol!...
welcome to the internet.

Did you hit the "back to arrangement" button?

rtfm page 16
So he took the time to read and try to understand your problem. Identified the most likely cause and took the trouble to check the manual to find the correct page (at least in my copy) in order to direct you to the explanation.

But instead of saying thank you, you pick him up on his use of the term rtfm.

If it was meant harshly I don't think it would have been used in such a helpful context.

I think you are being over sensitive.

So why in Dog's name include "rtfm?!!" If it was offered in a friendly manner, there was no indication. Anyone who's been on the web for more than a minute should know how something like that might be taken. The problem I have with the reply can be put simply: Don't make assumptions.

Anyone who's been on the web for more than a minute should have a little thicker skin and not get bent out of shape when someone suggests you 'read the fucking manual'.

Oh.. it's page 16 for me too.. Out of 564 pages you didn't even need to read a fraction of the manual to find the solution. It's a lot to ask, I know.

It took a few hours for someone to answer your question. At least he answered it for you. That was one person, not "musicians".
If you were at a restaurant and you asked a waiter where the bathroom was, would you assume all waiters respond in the same way?
In another context, residents here read a lot of the same simple questions. Sure, if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all, but sometimes you just need to get it out. Someone answered your question in a curt manner, don't let it get to you.

I believe RTFM can also mean "read the fantastic manual".

even if it meant "read the fucking manual" it would rather be offensive towards the manual and not towards the OP.
