While I'd be minority to defend CR's post, that analogy is flawed.
You're not stealing it from the store, you're taking it from the guy who stole it from the store and is giving them away for free. Not that it makes it ok but is is a bad analogy.

The real difference in this case being that most people don't steal a candy bar, and then go outside, eat it, walk back in, and state to the shopkeeper:

"I have stolen a candy bar from you, and found it delicious".

that is a dick move in either the situation of physical theft or piracy.

Yeah, I don't get the flaunting thing, especially since he makes money using their tools. I guess I don't understand that angle.

I think it's called the "twat" angle.

Imho.. I'd rather read a CR rant and be entertained, than listen to a Yacht song and be bored.

Just saying... AD plugs sound good.

Maybe it gives them a little exposure but telling him to bill them instead of just paying? Fuck off.
Personally I would've brought the cops into it, which I usually consider as a last resort.
Arrogant little twats.

the analogy is still flawed though... because really, it's like going into a store, making an exact copy of the candy, eating it and THEN telling the shopkeeper it was "delicious and so satisfying".

i'm not a fan of piracy, but at some level it is 'just a copy'.

an ancient feud started when the first guy who opened a pub found out another guy opened a pub.

"you can't use fire to cook with! our tribe invented that!"

life is imitation... the internet is just high speed imitation.

that argument of : "but when you steal something it goes away", is just so weak.

The last guy who said that to me I confessed to him that the previous night I fucked his girlfriend.

she was still there. No problem I guess.

^ that is a problem... now, on the other hand, had you made a clone of his girlfriend and boned the clone instead... how hurt would he be?

The crux of the issue is the logical fallacy in the justification: "it's not theft if the original is still there", because software products do not have physical entity. They are intangibles and are never "there" or anywhere. It's a logical fallacy of false equivalence.

Software is intangible, not actually a thing, it is more equivalent to a service - like "work" .

Work does not have physical location. I can do work stacking shelves at a store, but after the work is done and I go home, where is the work? can we point at it or pick it up? It is a concept, a memory. So now: do I get paid for stacking shelves or not?

Or is the argument that: no more "work" was required of the author when the copy was made, therefore the original 'work' is still unaffected?

A more accurate conceptual parallel is in the form of Money, which is not really pieces of paper but a concept represented in various forms. Ask yourself ... What are economic pitfalls of rampant counterfeiting of money?
There is no "theft" as any original pieces of paper (notes) are still where they were, but now some copies are available. So is counterfeiting any problem at all?

also, riddle me this:
Why do comedians get angry when someone "steals" their jokes? Surely everyone could tell the same joke?
right?
