Good Headphones for Mastering/Mixing

Post by CerebralFX » Wed May 09, 2012 5:31 pm

I'm finishing up a mini album and I'm wondering do you guys have any good recommendations for headphones which are really good for the finishing touches...(I've a budget of about 150euro/200dollars).
I've been told the Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro's or the Sennheiser HD-380 Pro.

I will second whoever said DT770, I've got a pair, and have no complaints.

You use the DT770's? Cool. So you'd definitely say these for excellent for mastering/studio usage at 150euros?

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 600 -- and they are amazing. I've had them for... 10 years now? Jeez, can that be right? But anyway they're amazing. A little pricy. Sometimes I think they're almost TOO good.

I can't speak to the HD 380 Pro -- but I can definitely vouch for Sennheiser.

Haven't heard the DT770 either so I don't know how they compare.

I'm using TMA-1's by aiaiai. Really like them and I find the form factor to be great, also very durable. They're super flat as well.

I've used the HD600's from sennheiser in the past, and its true that they're fantastic headphones as well.

Can't speak personally about the DT770's, but I've heard very good things.

I got the Denon AH-D2000 phones a few weeks ago on numerous recommendations from another forum. A lot of the strict "mixing" headphones are open-backed and I wanted something closed that I could use for both mixing and recording. These things are super sturdy and comfortable (I routinely wear them for hours at a time), and they sound great. Got 'em for around $250USD/190 Euros.

I have the DT770 Pro 80 OHM and love them. Highly recommended.

a good comfortable fit for your head/ears is important too. also your own hearing and the kind of music you make will affect which headphones work best for you. if possible try and compare the top contenders before you buy.

Considering the most popular headphones on earth are the iPod HPs, use them and you'll be garanteed that you production translates correctly to most of the consumers.

Coming from the DT770's (which are no doubt spectacular), I absolutely love my etymotic ER-4PT in-ears. They don't bump as hard in the bass, but the range is phenomenal. Everything is perfectly balanced from high to low and you will get probably get better results with your mix. I do.
