Opinion: Cheap Mic for recording vocals...

Title pretty much says it all...

Looking for a cheap(ish) mic that will get the job done, nothing too fancy. Will be used mainly for recording vocals, but occasionally for sampling a few sounds as well. Currently using a Shure SM58, its decent, but looking for something more geared towards the studio.

Been looking at the AKG Perception line, any thoughts?

If u have a good mic pre with lots of gain, then consider a sm7b. Works great here on a variety of voices. Havent used the akg

I second this. My vocal rig is super cheap but sounds good to my ears, I'm releasing stuff and am pretty satisfied on my budget that it sounds pro enough. The sm7 is like, $350 new. It DOES run super quiet. I don't have a nice pre-amp. I just use a $150 new tc helicon voicetone t1 pedal as a gain booster. I actually apply the tc helicon compression to a degree going in. I use an additional popper stopper even though the sm7 has a sock on it, but my fricatives are out of control. I also use a reflection filter screen behind it cuz I'm just in my bedroom no vocal booth. I'm telling you this shit sounds pretty golden, or pretty golden for the $.

Thanks guys, a lot of good info here. Will review all the options and report back after I make a purchase and let you know how I'm making out.

Interesting to see a couple USB recommendations. Never really considered a USB mic as a serious piece of kit, maybe times are changing.
