Layering Kicks + Snares

Post by Eamonn Keogh » Mon Jul 16, 2012 1:47 am

Hey,
This is my first post here on the ableton forums i've been making music on my computer for over 2 years and i was just wondering how do you guys/gals process your drums samples?

For example in making a heavy house kick i usually use two vengeance samples, EQ them both, mix them alittle and add compression on the master group.

but, i'd like to hear about how you guys process your layered drum samples :P thanks (:

i kinda always figured the point of Vengeance samples was to avoid having to do any processing, since they're layered and compressed to s**t already.
I use the rack linked in this article a lot:

built to layer the different frequency ranges of 3 kicks, just throw a clicky high kick, solid mid-punch, and a deep low end one, then just mess with them 'til it sounds good.

Layering have the possibility to create a phase issue. So when I have to do it I'd like to prepare it in a new project, and export it as a wav to use it later.

layering should fill a desired need in certain sounds. Example you need more lows in a kick drum but you love the timbre of the one you have then layering an 808 is a good idea ect.

stretch that note has some cool kontact layered drum stuff.

I don't know the science behind this stuff i just stack all the drums until it sounds like it's clipping and then I'm pretty happy with that.

vengeance samples are dope for layering etc, but instead of layering them directly on top of each other, use samples to make new ones by combining bits of the Attack/body/boom/decay of different samples.

Metrum is frekkin dope for this kind of stuff, it's a plugin (from vengeance) with this kind of processing in mind.
