Global Scale change...

Post by gel-sol » Mon Jul 30, 2012 5:03 am

I have 8 midi tracks being sent midi note data from Noatikl (midi generator) using midi channels 1-8 respectively.

I also have an instance of the Scale plugin on each midi channel. What I would like to do is be able to change the scale/preset for all 8 channels at the same time, preferably by pressing a button/activating clips. That way I can create clips with more sophisticated chords/scales and activate them at will.

ANy help with this? I tried dummy clips activating different scales via an effects chain, but you have to duplicate that for every midi track, group and activate the group cells. Also if it's using dummy clips, it defeats the point of taking the randomly generated midi from Noatikl.

I figured there's some way to do this in Max, but I am not really a programmer.

Thanks!

Thanks for your post. I get what you're saying, but I have a bunch of other midi effects on each channel, like random and arpeggiator, so the scale effect would need to follow them in order to stay in key.

Some of the patterns Noatikl makes are pretty cool, but they might only be using 2 notes or octaves. I like to use the random effect to mess that up in a creative way.

But I do think your idea to route the midi info through one scale changer would be the optimal solution.

Hey Peter,

If the method you mentioned has minimal lag, then yes, it would be useful to me. The ideal situation would to be able to change scale at will.

I was trying something out this morning but hit a road block...

I have Notaikl on one midi track generating notes. Another midi track with Operator, with Random and Arpeggiator plugs before it. I then routed the midi from the operator track to another midi track which has the Scale plugin on it, and re routed that back to the midi track with Operator on it. The only problem with this is that the final result was playing the sum of the midi notes from the Operator track and the track with the Scale plugin. When the midi info comes out of the midi track with the Scale plug on it, I need it to bypass the Random/Arpeggiator plugs the second time around.

The only workaround I could think of was to introduce another midi track with just Operator on it (and deleting Operator on the midi track with the Random/Arpeggiator plugs), so after the midi info leaves the midi track with the Scale plug on it, it doesn't re-route through the Random/Arpeggiator plugs again. The drawback to this is that now I dont have the synth (operator) on the same track as the Random/Arpeggiator plugs, which I usually group and set up macros for easy manipulation.

I was thinking the most optimal way of doing this would be to construct some sort of "midi mixer" on a separate midi channel with the Scale plug, so all your midi tracks that rely on the Scale plug go through one instance of the scale plug, rather than duplicates that are programmed to change simultaneously. I have an older Macbook Pro, so I have limited CPU.

Thanks again for responding! It's good to have someone to bounce ideas off with!
