Begginer Advice Please

how are you guys who do not use reason laying drum patters down?

I think Reason will give a fantastic and quick understanding of the total studio environment and enable you to make great music very quickly...

...but ultimately Live you give you more creative options....

so get both and have a great time....

battery and stylus.

since you'll have Live, either of them would be good choices for your drum programming.

Impulse, which is bundled with Live.

impulse can work as a drum machine/ drum pattern device? If so then I should defintely get Live and forget about Reasons Redrum

Impulse IS a drum machine, but you program the patterns in a midi clip.

But there are tons of more sophisticated drum VSTs out there, some with their own pattern sequencers.

Battery doesn't have it's own pattern sequencer either, but I belive Stylus RMX has.

Battery comes with a huge number of drum kits and samples, where as impluse doesn't.

I use impulse quite often with samples loaded from DVD's on the front of future music or computer music. They often bundle a load of single hit bass drums on the front of a cover disk, or whole kits.

My main drum machine though is an external roland MC307, which I program in a midi clip and send, then record the audio as it comes in. Thats the kind of thing live will do and reason wont.

Get Live, and some good VST:s. The synthesizers in reason are complete wack. Propellerheads even had to invent the "Combinator" to get som decent sounds out of them.

Get Live, some NI VST:s and soundbanks, maybe Trilogy or impOSCar and you´re rolling. It´ll cost you a few bucks, but it´s worth it .

There are tons of free VSTs on the internet.

I like Reason. A freind of mine has it. but I don't like the sequencer on it. Some people absoultly love it. and it can make some good sounds.

Live is my sequencer for my studio (using both hardware and software) Reason is cool and all but I feel that it should be used in combination with other sound sources. (just like I wouldn't want to hear an album made all on a Yamaha RM1X, or just on a Korg EM-1) Variety is the spice of live. (to coin a phrase

)

Like the man said, try the demos, you'll quickly find what you love and hate about both Live and Reason.

I love em both, they work a treat together. If you wanna record audio get Live 5 and maybe start out with some free or cheap vsts. Computer music magazine has a whole sequencer package (which I hate) on it's coverdisk which comes with a few vsts such as a 303 emulator, drum module, etc. Try them out to get a feel for the Live/Vst connection... without having to shell out for costly vsts you can pick up later if you want to.

But Reason is fab as well. You're spolied for choice ! Test em out before you spend and have fun.

Yeah Kruder and Dorfmeister are great. Get in there and make some great music Cartel00...
