Apple $29 Thunderbolt > FireWire adapter lives!
Re: Apple $29 Thunderbolt > FireWire adapter lives!
So TB doesn't provide enough wattage to bus power? Really?

yup, it has enough power for low-power devices only.

It has less than Firewire but still double that of USB 3.dazzer wrote:So TB doesn't provide enough wattage to bus power? Really?

Suk. Wheres Steve Jobs when you need him.
anyone know if TB uses a TI driver or not?
I had problems with my Ultralight on non-TI driver firewire ports.

Well, it works. Just tried the adapter with my Duet (v1) and it installed flawlessly and is working without a hitch so far. It isn't particularly stable at low latencies (anything below a 200 sample rate tends to get glitchy) but that may be the case even if the machine has a true Firewire port -- I've not got anything comparable to test it against. It can get lower latencies than my 2006 Macbook with a Firewire 400 port anyway. I'm thinking there may be an RME Babyface somewhere in my future but this'll do for now.

Just hooked up my UltraLite Mk3 (FW only) to my new 13" MBA, and it seems to work like a charm.. it even powers it just fine, even off of battery. I don't have my condenser mic handy, but switching the 48v switch on works as well (not sure if it will actually draw more power with no condenser attached).

that's great news. Hopefully my mk1 will be similarly lucky...
Re: Apple $29 Thunderbolt > FireWire adapter lives!
correct me if i am wrong, but if you have a FW400 device and you plug it into a FW800 port, it still works as if it was plugged into a FW400 port...no increased performance. i would think the thunderbolt port would be the same way. you guys might be wasting your 30 bucks.

How come?eddiex wrote: you guys might be wasting your 30 bucks.
It's not about increasing performance but to get FW interfaces to work at all with new MBPs that don't have FW port.
I'm waiting for an expresscard to TB adapter.

Great, thanks. And at reasonable cost already, a year more and there will be more selection and prices half from that.fishmonkey wrote:they already exist:LeifonMars wrote: I'm waiting for an expresscard to TB adapter.

Re: Apple $29 Thunderbolt > FireWire adapter lives!
Just got it in the mail today with my new macbook air.
Leave for a tour in Europe tomorrow and was hoping the bus powered option of the MOTU would work.
My MKIII ultralite works and is bus powered w/ the TB > Firewire adapter.
Ran Ableton through a few sessions.
Seems good.
It did crash once but I think that was because of another issue.
I'll update you.
