Wordpress users: themes to make my site look less bloggy.

Post by Silverfish » Tue Jan 12, 2010 8:45 pm

I'm currently using Wordpress to put together a website.

However, I would like my website to be less blog and more like a traditional html site. I thought of just coding basic html and forgoing Wordpress altogether, but it is really simple and handy to use.

So, any theme suggestions or great examples of musicians sites?

Hi, I mentioned this in another post, but it's worth looking through Smashing Magazine's tagged wordpress articles.
there are a few good ones with 50+ funky themes, and also lots of articles on modification and such.

I would stick with a well supported CMS engine like WP rather than going the raw grinding html route.
There is nothing but hours of pain awaiting you that way.

Angstrom, thanks so much for that link!

I caught that in one of the other threads, and I've been searching the site for tips, themes, etc.

Some cool ones here, use the 'all themes' link top right to see all the different ones. Basically find one that has the functionality and features you want, then butcher the css stylesheet, and php files to get it to look exactly how you want.

When I was unemployed, I taught myself CSS and used online Wordpress. I found I could do just about anything I needed without actually maintaining my own content management system. At first I built my own little audio player widget based on WP's provided one, but once they got integrated with Soundcloud it became an ideal solution.

I haven't done much to maintain the site in about a year, but it's still live, I think. Take a look if you're still interested at www.crow-caw.com.
Live 9.1 <> occasionally Reason 4.0.1 <> Reaper.latest! <> Windows 7 on a bespoke Intel Q6600 <> ASUS P5E <> 8GB RAM, M-Audio Delta 2496 and that's it.

working on my own WP page and for some reason I never thought to ask on a music production forum for tips. I wonder why...

lol - still, good advice, appreciated. my friend chose the reactive theme and we're running with it.

sorry for the OT.

Don't know what kind of requirements you have for your site, but one easy to use company is
http://www.wix.com/

It doesn't use Wordpress.

I got mine from theme forest, very nicely made and supported.

I second the themeforest route. They have hundreds, if not thousands, of premium themes for ~$30 a pop. You should be able to find something that you like. As far as not looking "bloggy", maybe go with a theme that has a static homepage, seems to do the trick.

I strongly recommend making your own theme. It's really not super hard to learn if you have a general grasp of web design and how WP works under the hood. The PHP that WP uses is pretty basic, especially if you just want to put together a music website. Install WP and pour over the codex for info: http://codex.wordpress.org

I built my theme myself from scratch. The project is still in-progress (and I'm sure the site is buggy, heh), but it looks cool and does the job: http://hacktheplanetfcm.com/

I like yootheme. They have a lot of templates - and a template framework called warp that helps you make your own theme. Plus, the guys that run the website are cool and helpful.

Part of the reason I went with Wordpress over doing it via html like I used to, is that for $30, you can get a really well made with lots of admin panel features, and save yourself a lot of work. And most are dead easy to deconstruct and modify if you want to make your's a little more unique.
