i always find its easiest to get that objective listen to a track if i put it aside completely for 2 or 3 days, fresh listen always immediately reveals what needs to go, what should stay

Good post as always

I like to render out mixdowns of whatever I'm working on every few days and throw them on my iPhone. Then I'll listen to them back on the train to work and make notes, so I can go back and edit stuff based on my notes later on. I really find it helps to be more objective when I can't just start changing stuff there and then, otherwise I get sidetracked, just tweak this or that and suddenly I'm back in producer mode. Listening away from the studio really helps me stay in listener mode. Good headphones obviously a must here, though I do sometimes like to listen on the stock iPhone 'buds as well, just as another point of reference.

Good call about getting away from the DAW where it's too easy to once again get sucked bad into the minutia and not focus on the big picture.

This is actually the biggest thing we've used the Export to Soundcloud feature for -- we export our tracks in progress as private soundcloud tracks, and then mark all of our notes on there -- they are accessible anywhere we have internet (aka everywhere).

Then after a few days of taking notes, or whenever feels good, we can pop back into Live and look up all the notes for things to change. It also gives me and my music mate a good way to voice our opinions and make decisions.
