UC33 & Rewire

Post by Gof-R » Wed Jul 20, 2005 11:55 am

Hi all,

I am trying to use Live 4.0.1 with a rewire application (Reason 3.0), and I would like to use my Evolution UC33 to control both applications, I mean I would like some of the UC controls to be assigned to Live controls, and some other UC controls to be assigned to Reason.

The problem is that I cannot split the USB midi port of the UC33 between both application: when I open Live first, and then reason, I have a message saying that Reason couldn't setup the control surface properly because it may be used by another application...

A friend of mine told me that this configuration is working perfectly on his laptop, so I have no idea where the problem come from (he's working on Mac, I work on PC, I don't know if it makes a difference, moreover he is working with Reason 2.5, instead of 3.0)

The only thing I could do is deactivate the UC33 USB midi port in Live: then I can control Reason with the UC, but of course I cannot control Live any longer :(

Thanks in advance for your help !

Hi Gof-r,
Welcome to the board...

Could be a few things.

I'm at work so I can't check it. But Reason should be able to "see" the UC33 e even if Live is also using it. Check in your Reason folder that you have the Rewire engine installed.

You may have to go into Reason prefs and manually assign UC33e to Reason's midi input. You'll also have to make sure you direct it to a midi device in Reason by clicking the relevant midi icon in the sequencer.

Once you have Reason recognising the UC33e, you need to use the correct preset to get the correct controls for each device. That's in the manual.

I can get it all going with my setup which is Reason 2.5 and Live 4.1.2. So maybe you could do with downloading the most up to date version of Live (4.1.4 as it happens) and see if it has better Rewire support.

You won't be able to get the same set of controls doing different things in Live and Reason at the same time - you need to use two separate presets for each app. But you can route midi control from Live to Reason, which might let you do what you want.

Hope that helps... :)

Hi Gof-r again,
I'm home now and the set up works as expected. Check that Reason has the UC33 as Remote Control midi input (Advanced Midi tab). Try Edit MIDI Mapping and click a control on a device. Tick learn from midi, turn a control on your UC33 and you should be fine. Skip back to Live and you should also be able to use your controls as preset there too. That help?
