Who is this refuser of regular coffee you are talking about? Have you some specific incident in mind? Who hurt you?

Well said, and awesome post - I'm envious of your job.

Roasted coffee costs so much here I've been toying with the idea of roasting my own ever since seeing this insanely dangerous looking contraption. Do you reckon it's realistic to do at home (I live in an apartment) or not worth the bother?

you're the one who got all butt hurt about the replies. don't try and act all coy now that you've thrown your little fit about how others posts don't meet your coffee thread expectations.

That's almost funny! I did mean "Coarse" and not "course," of course. :)

Actually I know a number of people who are into home roasting (yes, I know, hahaha) as a hobby and get some really admirable results for the amount they've invested in gear.

For home roasting, I'd start out with a Hot Air Popcorn Popper, and see if you get into it. You can move up as far as you want in complexity after that. One of the most important things is to know where you can get a small amount of green coffee you'd like to try to roast. Sweet Marias is a great site to check out for lots of information on home roasting. I see you're in Ireland, so it may not work for you to get your beans through them, but I bet you can find some source a little closer to home.

If you decide to go for it, let me know, PM me and I'd be happy to give you what tips I can on roast levels, good coffees to look for, etc.

Nice one, I appreciate that! I think it'd be good fun to try at least.

I just find it hard to take your post seriously because you seem to be drawing some kind of line in the sand between the 'real' coffee drinkers who aren't afraid of drinking an everyman cup of joe, and the coffee 'snobs' who are waving French presses in the air. It's like some bizarre West Side Story number.

No-one here has said they would refuse regular coffee (seriously?), just that they like X method/coffee type, and one or two have dissed percolators/Lavazza or whatever. There is a difference between taking an interest in making your coffee better and... whatever you think coffee snobs do.

Having said that I would literally upend a table if anyone had the gall to serve me freeze-dried.

being able to drink coffee that isn't prepared to exacting specifications using the most advanced coffee making equipment on the planet also means that i don't feel like a total asshole when nothing else is available and i'm offered a cup.

Question: would you like a cup of coffee?
Answer: well that depends; how was it made, what kind of beans where used and were any poor children harmed in the harvesting of those beans?
Response: do you want some fucking coffee or not?
that's what i posted.

it wasn't a personal attack on your coffee experience it was mine. me. not you. fwiw i like good coffee, but while everyone had an opinion on what is that best coffee i chose to comment on 7/11 coffee. my bad?

if a blue collar mechanic or an IT lab rat offers you a cup of coffee.... try telling them about how you only drink certain kinds and see where that gets you. i'm highly doubting you'll turn the table over.
