A video that reminded me what electronic music really is.
A video that reminded me what electronic music really is.
Maybe this was posted somewhere, but I'd be happy to share my observations which maybe will help someone stuck in writer's block.
In a world of vst presets, we tend to forget what experimentation is. I've realised, that everything I've tried to achieve is pointless.
Sitting in front of a computer with a huge plan of writing a piece of music that consists of complex harmonies and other shit... Trying to create a perfect bassline, a perfect mix down, etc. I forgot what electronic music is about after all. It's about experimentation. Mangling with knobs few hours just to get 5 seconds of good sound. About being unique, not about sounding as few hundreds of other "perfect" artist with nexus on their disks.

And here's a video of that interview. What struck me, is that what Moby once said is exactly true. (paraphrasing) He felt sorry for all the people who thought being an electronic musician is cool. Electronic musicians sit in front of a computer for most of the day, programming sounds, vsts and other shit. He said they were absolutely not cool.
Here it is. An electronic musician. An IT guy, a max programmer, a nerd "lacking social skills" (as he said).
Well, it may not be a true revelation for any of you, but the whole image opened my eyes again.

Good stuff. A lot of truth (IMO) spoken in that interview.
Don't follow the herd, use mistakes to spark ideas, and so on.
There are lots of other videos on the site to watch too. I may be there for a while!

That's true of anything you do.102455 wrote:Don't follow the herd, use mistakes to spark ideas, and so on.
But if you don't follow the heard how can you be cool?
I mean I can't possibly have a banging track without an 808 kick, eh?

Anything goes
Anything can happen
Limitations keep dying every day
Don't be burdened by someone else's fantasy. Yes, fantasy. Moby probably really likes it like that. So that is cool that he is doing it his way. You live your dream, however complex or cheesy or whatever it's gonna be. Have dreams, and do what feels like 'you'.

Just use Ableton Live to have fun and please your ears. Don't even do what you think is "you", do whatever is FOR you. Serve yourself, and then maybe make a digestible package out of it for others to taste - a track.

Music and musical instruments have been things that I've played all my life. I feel sorry for people that feel they need to "produce" music.
