i just went to Alpine Meadows for the first time on Christmas day and loved it!!machine+1 wrote:In need of some advice here. Heading to Tahoe for 4 days in early February with the family (4 adults, 1 infant) and I'm trying to decide where to go. I've only been snowboarding in the area once before (Heavenly) and I really didn't like it-- way too many flat traverses, poorly laid out lifts. A lot of folks like Northstar it seems, I thought Sugar Bowl looked nice but kind of isolated... Thoughts?
i went to Boreal on New Year's Eve day and loved it there too!
Alpine Meadows was a really nice facility with plenty of good runs, but is more skiers. Boreal is much cheaper and geared heavily toward snowboarding - there is a series of rails to grind and bowls and such there too. the lodge at Boreal is old and not as nice as other places i've been.
what level of trails are you looking for? i know that a lot of the Heavenly crowd like the blacks there. i don't do black trails though... i've had 2 knee surgeries and i don't go enough to get bravado about it, so my trip to Heavenly a few years back was okay... but it's super expensive and i noticed a higher douche factor there. i didn't notice any douche factor at Alpine Meadows or Boreal.
hope this helps.
Re: OT: Snowboarding... as in riding... snowboards...
Thanks for the suggestions! Alpine Meadows looks very chill , plus it looks like they honor tix with Squaw... Since our trip is mid week I don't expect any place to be super crowded.
Not really into black trails either these days (new baby, life insurance), maybe a few per day if the conditions are right. Mostly enjoy long blue runs and some gentle terrain park stuff.
Having grown up skiing in the East during the 80s, I can say the overall douche factor anywhere is a lot less these days... and I find California peeps warm and fuzzy in general.

then get over to Alpine Meadows!!
if you do decide to check out Boreal... they have a the longest, widest most wonderful green on the right side of the mountain.. great for kids or for getting your legs back. there is an awesome blue run on the left side, but you will have to walk to it or take the main lift up and head left at the top. i had the best boarding day of my life on that mountain the last day of last year.
one final note... i don't know if this is all Shell stations, but i have seen two that have a deal... if you put 10 gallons of gas in your tank you get a pass. i can't remember all the resorts that it covers... i think there are 4, but Alpine is one of them.

Shell runs those deals all over the country. Just be sure to read the fine print, often times the discount is only good one day of the week, or not in certain times of the year.

putting to bed the myth that skiers go 'bigger', look at shaun whites first hit, 7 feet higher than the Ski Superpipe gold medal winner
