Can't stand Foo Fighters or Dave Grohl, plenty of loud, angry guitars and slamming drums - very little real feeling and really fuking boring. It's all subjective of course. And the idea that rock is dead is just ridiculous. Everything goes in cycles. Listen to a band like The Men, they've got the rock.

^ not a huge foo fighters fan myself. i like Grohl much more as a drummer.

i do miss a good rock album from time to time and those have become somewhat rare... having said that... 'Portugal. The Man - The Satanic Satanist' is one of the best albums i've heard in years.

that JAPANDROIDS album is pretty awesome!!! of course rock isn't completely dead, but it sure ain't the early 90's around here or the mid 70's or 60's. it's not even close.

"Portugal. The Man - The Satanic Satanist".... cool, I'll check it out. I've heard of them but have never actually listened to them.

Apologies for any thread derailment, the documentary does look interesting.

dude...i love a good discussion!!
here is the most famous japandroid track  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRVCtbfuDqw all of their stuff is like this. kind of anthem rock. kind of like THE REPLACEMENTS or something. this album made a bunch of top album of the year lists, and for good reason...if you are into this type of thing. as you said, its all subjective.

Not impressed with the Japandroids. Formula pop rock IMO.
Since I seem to be the only one listening to any metal I'll say that looking at the charts for active participation in a musical style by the audience isn't going to work.
For instance metal is still huge, but there are thousands of bands and hundreds of genres, so looking for one metal band to sell a ton isn't gonna happen.

Same with rock in general, and that goes for more mainstream styles, whereas with pop electronic music it seems there are fewer zealots, if it's a banging club hit, it's a banging club hit.

Japandroids... I'd go see them play live - looks fun! You might like No Age... also a two piece.

Here's one I like by Liars:

These are both a few years old (at least) and have nothing to do with the OP.

cheers

I didn't like any of the rock shared on this page.

But thanks for sharing and being special.

The liars aren't bad, though IMO that kind of rock should be 3:30 or under, otherwise it drags in spots, takes away from the energy.

you are not the ONLY person that listens to metal. i love old classic metal, i used to be in a metal band in the 90's...but that genre got stale after a while too. dudes started cutting their hair, doing songs with rap bands, the metallica black album came out  korn and limp bizcut happened... im from d.c. originally, the metal scene was like cancer out there. every body talked about how awesome being in a scene was, then talked mad shit behind each others backs. it soured my taste for it. i got pumped for metal again when neurosis came out with enemy of the sun!!! that album was phenomenal. so was mastodon's leviathan. that is a killer record. then all those dudes started trying to actually sing. im big into clutch... red fang shows promise here in portland. i know those aren't typical metal bands. but.
im not saying there isn't an underground rock scene(i use the term rock loosely)...obviously there is and always will be. but it ain't like the 90's where 4 out of every 5 bands you hear on the radio, is guitar based. that extends into the underground. i bet good money, there are more kids buying ableton and/or dj gear than marshall half stacks these days....not saying that is good or bad either way. but guitar based music, is definitely not prevalent.

Nu-Metal was/is the worst.
OK maybe that Emo crap that happened a couple years ago... In fact I think we might be on to why rock has been stagnant, after Grunge it took a huge nosedive as far as radio friendly rock is concerned, Nu-Metal, Emo, and Indie are all fucking awful! Sure there might be a good song in there somewhere, same could have been said about hair metal and disco, doesn't mean the genre itself isn't a steaming pile.

What are your feelings on Garage Rock (Jack White’s 50 projects, The Kills, etc.)? I dig the rawness of it.

Modern Garage rock area is an interesting area. What it seems to aim for is a visceral authenticity, the raw sound of real poor white dudes in 1968 detroit with nothing to lose but their stake in a speed deal.
But it obviously exists within a modern world of overly-anal engineering, global touring of festivals and Big brand sponsorship.

It's hard to reconcile those two things.
