here is an interesting, yet kind of annoying, commentary on what we have been talking about here. (if you haven't drank your coffee yet, and are kind of cranky, you might want to skip this video for a bit)

Angstrom, in no way connected to anything said or inferred in this thread, you've made my day.

You are paying for a "live" concert when in fact your getting a partially live/karaoke performance.
Yes.

I can't say too much but I know that a very, very large and famous mainstream band who play with a Vocals/guitar/bass/drums setup ...They mime to a prerecorded set when they play arenas. This is not an "electronic" band in any way at all. I was surprised how common this is.

I find it pathetic.
It's very common. And while they may be playing "live"they are playing over a Protools rig
playback. That's a totally different energy than a true live performance.

Old man statement ahead, but American Bandstand and Solid Gold. Hugely successful American shows in the 80's and prior to that featured top charting artists playing "live" with not one damn instrument plugged in. I'm sure globally the same type show was going on.

And not to give a pass to all DJs and performers who fake it on stage, but it's pretty damn difficult to be in the moment feeling it on stage and only toy with things when it's having an actual effect. I submit the practice of air guitaring into evidence.
You can always toy around with the cued track that nobody else hears. :D

Glad I didn't watch this in the morning. The use of the phrase "IRL" just about made me vomit.

However he does bring up some good points- music these days is generally experienced through recordings, and when it is performed live, it is expected to sound like the recording. As we're talking about in this thread, way too much of music isn't even performed AT ALL, and is literally JUST the recording being played.

I think it's time we brought improvisation and live performance back to the mainstream. The world doesn't need any more DJs or lip syncers.

LIVE and Un-Plugged!!!

I swear there are people out there who think the DJ is literally making all the music as he goes.

That's funny. The way people ride DJ's dicks around where I live you'd think they were curing aids (instead of spreading herpes.) lol. Anyway, people (females) must not realize that anyone who can count to 4 can DJ. That's why I conclude that they think there is much more happening up there than there actually is.

I hope you're not serious. There's a lot more to it than that.

Yes. While counting to 4 you have to rub the top of your head in a circular motion whilst blowing a raspberry.

:P

 Oh yeah, I'm in stitches here. Ha de har! :|

Even the "count to 4" statement implies that one has to mix to be a "real DJ" which isn't the case.

Y U MAd brah?Incidentally, I am a DJ simply because it's the way that I perform electronic music. I realize DJ'ing involves a bit more than counting to 4 but come on dude, it's ridiculously simple. Unless you're DJ Craze or some other beat-juggling turn-tablist, beat-matching is so easy!

I'm not mad......."brah".

Beat matching does not = DJing. Mixing does not = DJing. Or counting to 4 etc. etc.

Would you say that having fingers makes someone a great guitar player? Or that picking up a paint brush means they will be able to create works of art?

No, because there's more involved. Anyone can put a CD on, but that doesn't make them a DJ.
