This might be a silly question but when you create a new audio track..is it mono or stereo?

I'm just about to get into using it for recording / mixing etc.

how is it defined..or do you select if you create a mono or stereo/

Also what happens when you put a mono sample on to a stereo track?

Sorry for the basic questions

Audio tracks are stereo. If you add in a mono track, it will convert it to stereo (with the L and R being equivalent).

And if you ever want to pass just the L or R channel to the output for any reason, throw in a utility device and play with the channel mode.

so if i open an audio track and stick a mono kick drum on it ..its converts to stereo???

So you can't choose if an audio track is mono or stereo without the utility

What about midi tracks? are the automatically stereo tracks or mono...?? can you choose?

Ableton Live pretty much processes everything as stereo. For example:

If you create an audio track and record from only 1 mono input, Live will record the information and store it as a mono audio file; but any effects or plugins that are added will behave as if it is a stereo track, Keep in mind though, even though it is coming through on 2 tracks; as long as both sides are identical, it is a mono signal anyway.

Also, if you drop a mono sample into a drum rack or sampler instrument, it will still come out as mono, but any other effects will treat it as if it were stereo. If you would like to ensure things remain mono, you can use the Utility effect to either set the stereo field to 0% or set it to get signal from only the left or right channel.

I hope this helps. 8)

Correction- if you add a mono audio file into ableton, it stays mono. I just ran a quick test.
