Good headphones around 150$????

Post by iliveinmyguitar » Sat Mar 02, 2013 4:25 pm

Hey guys, lookin to buy a decent pair of headphones for about 150$ give or take. I've been using the sennheiser HD280 pro, but I noticed they lack the dynamics that my friends headphones have(dn-hp1000). Im considering buying what he has but if anyone can recommend me something different and more suitable for EDM production that would be great. Thanks in advance!

Hi ! I recently bought the Sony MDR7506 for 120 bucks in my town, they had a discount on it. I think you can find them around 150$ on the net. As far I used them I love them, the sound is very clear, I think they have a quite flat frecquency spectrum. I've heard some people saying that they were lacking some low frecquencies but I have to disagree. Of course they don't have "overpowered" bass like you would hear with shitty Beats headphones, but I think they are perfect. The high frecquencies are very clear and I listen to a lot of tech-house stuff like Claude Von Stroke, Shadow Child, Eats Everything and I can tell you there is no lack of low frecquencies !

So, the Sony MDR series would be my advice ! ;)

Sony MDR 7506 for me too.

That being said, it is best to actually try them out for yourself. I kept trying different ones to no avail. Finally, I go to a music store that let you try out a bunch. I went through about 12 and the Sony's won me over.

The Sony MDR7506 are good, but every single review I've read of the ATH-M50 has said that they are the best headphones for any purpose, in particular mixing and mastering which needs the flattest frequency response possible. Plus they look pretty cool too. And yeah, whatever you get, please don't be conned by the beats advertising. No producer or engineer would use beats in their right mind! They are purely an overpriced fashion statement.

I've got a pair of ATH m50's and I'm quite fond of them. As for being the flattest frequency response in the price range, I am not sure of, but I can tell you that after a few weeks of use bass response increases somewhat. They can be pretty boomy at times, but not like a pair of Beats. They are far better balanced (or so I've heard) than Beats are. I picked mine up at soundprofessionals.com, they have a special going on every few weeks for a $99 dollar pair, and they have an option to install a removable headphone cable, so I did that and my total ended up being around $130. I'm very happy with my purchase ~5 months later, but I'm going to need a new set of pads here soon, mine are drying out and starting to crack.

the ATH-M50s are good closed-back headphones. however, if you don't need the isolation, good open or semi-open headphones are generally sonically better than closed-back headphones.

Why not try some of the etymotic hf5 in ear headphones. Just a thought.

I don't post often, this time I think I might.

I've tried ALL (apart from etimotycs) of the headphones suggested before.

In the end, I bought Shure SH840.

Give 'em a try.

And first of all, try them on your head listening to a CD you know well.

I have a Sennheiser HD 429 and AKG K619. Love them both, especially the AKG ones.
