Will Max4Live Be Compatible With 64 Bit Live 9?

Post by Acid303 » Tue Mar 05, 2013 11:12 pm

Is it just temporarily incompatible and something they have said they or cycling are working on and definitely implementing?
Will it be a free update?
Is it likely to be soon?

Seems quite concerning that everything will be moving to 64 bit and max4live might get sacrificed in the process and become useless as more and more people buy new computers with more than 4gb of ram and want to use that power.

Thanks

I've been running both Max 6 and Live 9 in 64-bit all day using Max For Live.

Only issue is if you use externals that are only available for 32bit. I haven't seen too many people doing that though.

Im still wondering why Max for Live 64-bit compatibility wasn't announced anywhere here or on the beta forums. This is pretty big!

Because it was a given. We knew Live 9 was going to be 64-bit so it logically followed that Cycling '74 were going to have to get Max 6 to 64-bit by Live 9's release date.

Fair enough, however even the reference material they point you to STILL says M4L is incompatible with 64-bit. Sure it says Live 8 but that is the link they provide from the live 9 install ;)

I just think they should be more clear about this, not knowing could turn potential upgraders off. It also adds confusion to what versions you should install. ("Hmmm...it says Max for Live is incompatible with 64-bit Live. But I see a 64-bit M4L install? Since im running 64 bit windows, which one do I install?")

Originally I installed 64-bit trials for Live9 + M4L, but after reading 64bit-myths-facts I uninstalled those and installed the 32-bit versions of both. Within a few hours I noticed a client crash. My actions at the time of the crash and my skepticism from what I read, lead me to believe that this was a memory related issue but I don't know for sure! Since I don't recall my 64-bit version of Live 8 ever crashing on me, I will probably install the 64-bit versions of Live 9 and M4L at the end of the day. My philosophy is that if I've built a 64-bit machine I should be installing 64-bit software, and if compatibility issues arise because of that decision then I'll roll with the punches. I'm concerned about software crashing more than plug-ins not working and I would hope any incompatibility issues that were around during beta have been weeded out.

Also, the article applies to versions 8.4-9, so when I read, "The 64-bit version of Live 8 will not support Max for Live or The Bridge," naturally I feel like I'm in the safe zone because I'll be using 64-bit versions of Live 9 and M4L.

The question of incompatibility was concerning at first. I felt like I hadn't done my homework thoroughly, or that I didn't read at all. And with the price of Live 9 I'd like to stay in the know as best as possible.

Also, I'm new to the forum. Hi everyone.

Welcome to the forum.

Definitely download the 64-bit versions of Live 9 and Max 6.1 (assuming you are on Windows). They are working great together here. :)

I'm on mac. I'm getting the info from here:

https://www.ableton.com/en/articles/64bit-myths-facts/

"What are the limitations of the 64-bit version of Live?
The 64-bit version of Live 8 will not support Max for Live or The Bridge.

When using the 64-bit version of Live, it is not possible to use Serato Scratch Live for real-time control of your Ableton Live Set. Sets cannot be loaded or synced to a deck in Scratch Live, and Live’s clips and tracks will not appear in Scratch Live.

Serato mixes saved in .als (Ableton Live Set) format can still be opened in the 64-bit version of Live and will work as expected."

Hi Ameree, could you explain what you mean by externals? Is it 32 bit only Max Patches?

The info is outdated and does not apply to Live 9/Max 6.1.

Externals are 3rd party Max objects and they will indeed need to be updated to 64-bit by their authors before they will work with M4L in Live 9 64-bit.
