Live 9 - SSD and HDD install

I think I have this sorted, but I'd like to hear if anyone else has other ideas. I have a two drive system for my computer with an SSD for the OS, programs, and sample library and an HDD for projects. I think this is the best breakdown for installation and cache locations...

Library - SSD
User Library - SSD
Factory Packs - SSD
VSTs - SSD

Recording Cache - HDD
Decoding Cache - HDD
Projects - HDD

Live 8 Library - HDD, assuming SSD space is limited and use of Live 8 library will decrease with Live 9 installed

Well its 2013, no need to bother with this wear and tear myth any longer.

I have switched to ssd completely, and it speeds up my machine so fast that I could cry tears of joy every time...

With the advent of SSDs is it even necessary to split things into two drives at all?

Unless you got a good amount of cash laying around, yes. I'd be wanting 480/500GB SSD's for space (future-proofing) vs 256GB (may be able to work with that but with NI Komplete 8, Damage, Evolve, Evolved Mutations 1 & 2, Live 8/9 and add-on packs space goes quickly. And it is better to have lesser writing done on OS disk = good for vst's, libraries/apps and 2ndary drive for recording. Loops should be on main disk unless you are constantly adding to your collection, then probably on smaller 3rd HD (7200 RPM would suffice and 1TB+ <$100 nowadays. I am going to be replacing 2 other 500GB HDD's with probably at least 1 HDD or keep my slower 500GB drive with loops and replace other 500 w/another 7200 RPM drive. Replaced 500GB 5400RPM with 7200RPM and saw noticable increase in boot time alone.

SSDs are pretty safe now. The way they break when they finally do break also happens very slowly, while hard drives tend to snowball down (since it's often a mechanical error).

I don't know how one can make that statement unless you've had them for 5 years +.

It's easy, actually. Simulate heavy usage. This sort of hardcore testing: http://www.reportingbrick.com/SSD+Reliability+Test. The problems everybody remembers from the first generation of SSDs are pretty rare now. So at least they're safer :)

But until I get SSDs I can afford in the terabyte range I'm sticking to spinning discs :/

People are paranoid with their SSDs these days. If they are so anxious about the wearing factor, then they should buy one and put it on a shelf.

Hello,

I've recently upgraded to an SSD. Are there any updates on this thread? Any experiences others may want to share?

For me, I'm experiencing lag when the libraries are on a separate HDD. So I think placing the Library, User Library, VSTs, Library Packs and Projects currently working on; into the SSD is the better option.
Any other experiences regarding the Recording and Decoding Cache?
